From The Denver Post:
Today marks 35 years in the business for Dan Mitchell as voice of 99.5 FM The Mountain. The Denver rock radio fixture has the most popular adult rock radio show in the market, 3-8 p.m. In an industry where firings and churn are the norm, he’s the exception.
Mitchell recently won the Colorado Broadcasters Association Award of Excellence in addition to having been named best show and best station personality over the years. His aim is to be in the CBA Hall of Fame someday and he shows no signs of slowing down. “My goal is 45 years. I told my father long ago I want to have a long career in Denver media.”
Mitchell recalled his first decade in the business was “a lot more fun” from a technical standpoint, in the days when he was playing albums, 45s and carts. Next came CDs, then computers. “Now it’s not as touchy-feely,” he said. It was also more personal in terms of walking down the hall and asking the GM of a mom and pop shop for a raise, as he did at KAZY (it was granted and made retroactive, on the eve of the birth of Mitchell’s son Bobby.)
Entercom’s KQMT at 99.5 FM counts some 600,000 cumulative listeners a week. Mitchell says, “I’m not a lot of bells and whistles,” he said, “just a guy who knows a lot about music. I have built a friendship with listeners and that’s something I truly cherish. It’s a relationship.”
