    Longtime ESPN sportscaster JOHN SAUNDERS died TODAY (8/10), the network has reported. No cause of death was disclosed.SAUNDERS was 61.
    SAUNDERS, a CANADA native, was best known as the host of "THE SPORTS REPORTERS" and as a SPORTSCENTER anchor as well as handling college football, basketball, and pro hockey and baseball play-by-play for the network and ABC since DECEMBER 1986, joining the network after five years at WMAR-TV/BALTIMORE. He previously worked at CITY-TV/TORONTO, ATV/NEW BRUNSWICK, and CKNY-TV/NORTH BAY, ON and called TORONTO RAPTORS NBA basketball for CITY-TV and CKVR-TV. SAUNDERS began his career while at RYERSON POLYTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY in TORONTO, doing news for CHOO-A (now CJKX-F)/AJAX, ON. He later served as News Director at CKNS-A/ESPANOLA, ON.
    ESPN Pres. JOHN SKIPPER said: “JOHN was an extraordinary talent and his friendly, informative style has been a warm welcome to sports fans for decades. His wide range of accomplishments across numerous sports and championship events is among the most impressive this industry has ever seen. More importantly, JOHN was a beloved and devoted family man who cared deeply about people and causes, as evidenced by his long-standing efforts as a passionate board member for THE V FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH. He was one of the most significant and influential members of the ESPN family, as a colleague and mentor, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”
