Default KUNC 91.5/91.7 FM to buy 105.5 FM for $3 million, split music/news formats. ESPN 105.5 FM will cease broadcasting on Jan. 3. ESPN Radio goes to KKFN/KEPN. iHeart Changing 760 AM To All Sports

Greeley-based community radio station KUNC has reached an agreement to purchase KJAC (105.5 FM) from Front Range Sports Network. The deal will allow the noncommercial station to split music and news formats, offering expanded news and information programming on its current dial position, 91.5 FM, and launching its non-commercial music format full-time on the new frequency.

The new music format will launch on Feb. 29 with “a combination of emerging and established artists, blending rock, blues, soul and more, reflecting Colorado’s unique lifestyle.” Colorado artists past and present will be prominently featured.

This means instead of switching to music at 9 a.m. and back to news and information at 2 p.m., as has been KUNC practice, the stations will offer 24/7 options of both music and news. Program schedules are yet to be determined.

ESPN Denver, which currently occupies 105.5 FM, will cease broadcasting on Jan. 3, ESPN Denver radio host Nate Kreckman said. The staff was informed on Friday.

“The writing has been on the wall for a while,” said Kreckman, one of two local hosts left at the station. “This had much more to do with station ownership looking to get out of the sports market.”

Sports radio station 104.3 The Fan is the dominant player in the market, and since ESPN Denver’s move to 105.5 FM, it has struggled with market penetration, especially because its signal was strongest in northern Colorado and weaker in the city.

The station was not owned and operated by ESPN (as some stations in larger markets are). Instead, ESPN Denver operated by an affiliate model, allowed to use ESPN logos and programming, including the “Mike & Mike Show” and “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.” That arrangement allowed for a mix of local and syndicated radio programming. ESPN could broadcast national games in the Denver market — such as this year’s World Series — while allowing the owner to keep costs down by relying on fewer local hosts.

Broadly, Disney-owned ESPN has struggled with seismic changes in the media business as more people have cut pay-television subscriptions in favor of over-the-top programming from the Internet, including Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and others. Sports programming has been somewhat insulated from those changes because local sports teams are still carried only on TV, though the NFL this year experimented with live-streaming a game on Yahoo!. ESPN has lost seven million subscribers during the last two years and has dumped high-priced talent as a result, including Keith Olbermann, Colin Cowherd (who just moved to FOX Sports). Front Range Sports’ move to sell the station is not believed to be related ESPN’s troubles.

KUNC will broadcast its current lineup on both frequencies after repairs and upgrades to the 105.5 transmitter site, beginning in January. KUNC president and CEO Neil Best said: “we are also in the process of developing a new app for your phone and tablet created expressly for our Music Discovery station.”

Staffing and technical considerations have yet to be addressed.

Community Radio For Northern Colorado, owners of Public News/Talk/AAA 91.5 KUNC Greeley/Fort Collins CO, has announced the acquisition of Front Range Sports Network’s “ESPN Denver” 105.5 KJAC Timnath.

The current sports format will cease on January 3, 2016 with CRNC launching a non-commercial AAA on the signal on Monday, February 29 All of KUNC’s music programming will move to the new signal, while KUNC will move to all Public News/Talk programming. More information regarding the purchase can be seen here.

Despite one station currently targeting Denver and the other Fort Collins, both are located on the same tower outside Fort Collins. KJAC operates with 50kW at 397 meters (Coverage Map).

Prior to flipping to Sports in 2012, KJAC was the first station in the United States to take on the Variety Hits “Jack-FM” branding in April 2004. Front Range Sports sold KJAC’s former simulcast partner 102.3 KDSP Greenwood Village to Colorado Public Radio earlier this year.

INSTANT INSIGHT: With Kroenke Sports acquiring Wilks Broadcasting’s Denver stations and iHeartMedia planning to launch a Sports station in the market, the loss of KJAC will put the ESPN affiliation in play for the market. Will it return to now Bonneville owned KKFN/KEPN or to one of the new players?

It is sad to see 105.5 going (again), to another player. They should have known this? A transmitter located just west of Fort Collins can NOT cover most of Denver! They should have known this,
when they bought 105.5. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if the tower is not in Denver, it won't at all cover most of the Denver area! Heck I even knew that, so it doesn't come to a big
surprise to me that, they had a hard time hearing it in south Denver. Plus with the bleed over with the station in Colorado springs, it is no wonder their ratings tanked still.
Well so much for hearing the CSU rams on 105.5. Dang it, I wonder who well pick that up?

There will be plenty of sports stations in Denver soon again.

    1) Kroenke is going to launch something in 2016 on one of their Denver FM stations.
    2) iHeart will be launching a new sports format on 107.9 FM Denver when the Christmas music format is done at the end of the year.

I'm only guessing, but iHeart may also change 760 AM to the sports format as well.

That is a very weak signal though. Sports again on 760?!? Great! (lets see how long that last?)
As I remember being told by the FCC, Denver is a closed market for any new FM signals.. There is no more room on the FM dial for anything new?
Plus who the heck is going to pick up the CSU rams games?

This should be quite interesting to see how Neil Best is going to do this? To make KUNC in all news/talk, and 105.5, music again?
They just have one studio there? Unless they do 105.5 as 91.5 HD 2? (humm).

Also rob, you got to keep this in mind?

No one listens to AM anymore for anything! Even for sports! So changing 760 would not be in their best interest at all!

Lots of options: iHeart's stations, Kroenke's stations, KKFN, KEPN...

Okay, so are you saying that iHeart or any other AM station owner should give up and not try at all or even take their AM stations off the air?
People do still listen to AM, but FM is king.

Again on 1600!?!? Back and forth it goes, to where no one can pick up 1600! As my memory serves me? Wasn't that the reason why Espon on 1600 was dropped before?
I don't get it, on why ESPN keeps on going back to a frequency that can't be picked up by anyone all the time? This would be the 2nd time that Espn been on 1600.

Who do you know Rob that listens to AM anymore? Even for sports? That is why AM stations are getting translators and being on FM. They know that not many people listen to AM much anymore?
Heck Iheart hasn't even advertised for KIIX at all! 1510 KCKK is on FM, just like KOA(as you already know?) . So putting 760 as a sports station would fail more than likley.
Just look at Mile High Sports, I am sure no one knows they are even back on the air on AM?

    Yes FM is KING!

It looks like that it may be happening because I was looking at radio-locator a few minutes ago and I saw that they changed 760's call letters from KKZN to KDSP. And according to the FCC site the call letters were changed on Thursday Dec. 10.
