After stunting all weekend as marijuana-themed “Pot 107.1“, Max Media’s former Dance KDHT Bennett/Denver has relaunched as Variety Hits “107.1 Jack-FM“.
The 3:00pm launch returns the Jack branding and format to the market three months after departing. The format had been heard on 105.5 KJAC Tinmath until that station flipped to a simulcast of sister Sports “ESPN 102.3” KDSP in September.

As fate would have it. MAX MEDIA Top 40/Rhythmic KDHT (HOT 107.1)/DENVER's weekend flip to legalized-weed POT 107.1 ("DENVER's Dope Hits!") (NET NEWS, 11/30) was ... well ... a veritable smokescreen. At 3p MT TODAY, the station flipped to Adult Hits JACK FM.

"We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to bring JACK back to the DENVER radio airwaves on 107.1," MAX MEDIA Pres./GM JEFF NORMAN said. "After all, DENVER was the first U.S. market to launch JACK FM in APRIL of 2004. JACK is a strong brand and a proven format that connects deeply with millions of listeners from around the globe."

It seems they are having some audio issues every once in a while, reminiscent of when the format was on KJAC.

Default 107.1 FM goes to pot, then Jack FM

    From The Denver Post:

    SparkNet Communications

Stunting is a time-honored ritual of the radio business. Create a fake station brand, promote it heavily for a brief time, court outrage and then announce the real format change. That’s what 107.1 FM did Monday, as it made the switch from “hot” dance music to Jack FM “adult hits variety music.” In the interim, it promised the first pot-themed station, complete with pothead music, with tracks and lyrics dedicated to weed. The website for 107.1 FM, briefly “Denver’s dope hits,” was scheduled to be revised by Tuesday.
Denver was the first U.S. market to pick up Jack FM from Canada in 2004. Recently, when Front Range Broadcasting dropped the format to plug in ESPN, Jeff Norman’s Max Media picked it up. “We let some people go last Friday. It’s never fun,” Norman said. Four staffers were let go, following the four let go last year under the “hot” format. The current staff of 32 carries on. The Jack FM format, from SparkNet Communications out of Nashville, is famous for using no dj’s. It’s all syndicated.
Besides the content, “they provide all the research and promotion. That’s beneficial for a small company like us,” Norman said. “There are two ways to make money in radio, increase revenue or cut cost. We are in a position where we had to cut costs.” He acknowledged the “Hot 107.1″ ratings just deteriorated, from 400,000 down to 123,000 listeners per week.
Norman claims a “through the roof reaction” to the pot stunt. “We hit FB, Twitter, hundreds of pop culture websites, pro-pot groups, anti-pot groups, churches, and did traditional press releases. People were on-line and listening from literally every state. In an hour into the stunt, we were getting music from labels. We had a CNN reporter in here this morning.” This was his followup to “The Pole” stripper radio stunt in 2009.
Page views, yes, but will that translate to ratings?

KDHT 107.1 FM has their new website up at ILoveJackFM.com
They have a online stream which is in mono. The song title info in their player is stuck with a song from their old dance format.
