Colorado Public Radio's OpenAir will begin broadcasting on 88.3 FM in Fort Collins later this summer after a frequency trade with Cedar Cove Broadcasting of Loveland. Formerly KRKY, airing a Spanish religious format at 88.3 FM, the signal will allow CPR to expand up north and builds on OpenAir’s move to FM on 102.3 in Denver/Boulder several months ago.
In the college town, might OpenAir be a competitor to KTCL 93.3 FM, the ratings-rich iHeartRadio outlet that has broken local bands like The Fray and Flobots to a national audience?
“We’re not trying to challenge commercial radio,” said Senior Vice President of Programming Sean Nethery. “We’re a mission organization, our mission is public service, education. We see new music as being just as much part of education as classical and news.”
Open Air was exclusively on AM and the internet for three years, then made the switch to FM in January.
Nethery said the OpenAir brand is “still building, trying to reach a younger audience, college-educated people who value public radio.”
The deal was reached by exchanging CPR’s 1340 AM in Denver for the Fort Collins frequency. CPR will continue to own the 1340 AM tower and the surrounding 10 acres at Ruby Hill.

KRKY aired the MOODY"S BIBLE programming it was never a spanish FORMAT!! aughh. A competitor to KTCL which is NOT in Fort collins but in Denver?!?! Seriously? Come on.. There won't be any competition with them. What they need to watch out for is 90.5 KCSU! Whoever wrote this article didn't do their research at all!

CENTENNIAL, Colo. May 28, 2015 – Colorado Public Radio (CPR) announced that OpenAir will start broadcasting on 88.3 FM in Fort Collins starting later this summer, meeting an expressed listener need to improve the quality and accessibility of CPR’s new music service. The new frequency builds on OpenAir’s recent move to FM on 102.3 in Denver/Boulder earlier this year.
“As Colorado’s destination for new music discovery, OpenAir needs to reflect what’s happening not just in the Denver metro area, but in key areas across the state,” said Senior Vice President of Programming Sean Nethery. “Since launching in 2011, we’ve featured a number of Fort Collins bands and artists on the air and in the CPR Performance Studio. Bringing OpenAir to Fort Collins will give listeners more access to these and the many terrific local musicians that are putting Colorado on the map as a major music destination.”
Since its inception, OpenAir has highlighted Colorado’s music community and provided listeners with insight and commentary about local musicians, new albums and upcoming events. More than 300 local, national and international bands have recorded performances and interviews in the CPR Performance Studio.
The addition of 88.3 FM was made possible through a trade purchase agreement with Cedar Cove Broadcasting, exchanging CPR’s 1340 AM in Denver for the Fort Collins frequency. CPR will continue to own the 1340 AM tower and the surrounding 10 acres at Ruby Hill.
THey are worried about KTCL? They should be more concern about KRFC! 88.3, no one knows about that frequency at all! Now unless Open air does some major advertising here in Northern Colorado, than everyone well know about 88.3. KTCL (what a joke), whoever wrote this article needed to do more research on this matter! KTCL as we all know has nothing to do with Fort collins one bit!
