Peter Maroney (semi-) retiring as GM at KDVR-KWGN
From The Denver Post:
Peter Maroney, a veteran general manager who guided KDVR-Channel 31 and KWGN-Channel 2 to stability after a particularly rough period, will retire effective June 26.
“I have decided to do some other things in my life,” Maroney said. Among them: think back on his 48-year broadcast career and do some writing about it, also possibly filmmaking. He won’t leave town or his Stapleton neighborhood.
“I have lots of things to figure out before I go, not the least of which is May sweeps. It’s been a great run here (five years) and in the career,” for the last 15 years of which he has been managing stations.
After “a tough start” when he replaced chaotic management at the reeling Denver duopoly (and got rid of the unfortunate “Deuce” branding), Maroney has righted the station. “We’re in great shape here. It’s a very stable leadership team that’s in place” and a younger audience, he said. “Tribune will make decision about the next general manager.” He has offered his services through the transition.
Part of his decision reflects a desire “to get back to my roots in this business, where I started as photographer and storyteller. I want to do some short personal films. I’ve got some subjects that have interested me for a long time. Call it urban anthropological filmmaking,” similar to the documentaries he produced years ago at WCCO Minneapolis.
He’s in good health, he and his wife Susan want to travel, they have two grandkids, he said, so “why not?”
Maroney oversaw stations in Houston, Boston, San Francisco and Portland as executive producer or Managing Editor of award-winning news departments. His passion was always original film and video production and he has three duPont-Columbia Awards for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism (the Pulitzer of Broadcasting) to show for it.
“It’s not retirement. I don’t know what that means anymore. If anything it’s semi-retirement.”
