Default TV ratings: Olympics vs. “Downton Abbey”

    From The Denver Post:

    Olympics Closing Ceremonies, AP

When it comes to ratings for the Olympics Closing Ceremonies on NBC vs. “Downton Abbey” on PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre, it’s all relative.
Sunday night’s Olympics Closing Ceremonies from Sochi on NBC was considered a low point for the network in terms of Olympics ratings. With a fraction of that audience, Sunday night’s season 4 finale of “Downton Abbey” on PBS was considered a major victory.
Nationally, the Olympics broadcast scored a 8.7 rating, 13 share with 15.1 million viewers, the lowest household rating for a Winter Games Closing Ceremony ever.
The Olympics’ farewell easily overshadowed Sunday’s other big-deal broadcast, the season finale of “Downton.” In PBS terms, “Downton” scored a terrific rating and sensational buzz. In commercial broadcast terms, it wasn’t a player.
The breakdown: In Denver, among adults 25-54, the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics on KUSA drew 133,144 viewers. (The Denver market ranked No. 6 in the country for the closing ceremonies with a 12.2 rating, 20 share.) The “Downton” season finale on RMPBS drew 22,562 viewers. That 22,562 represents “our Super Bowl,” said RMPBS President and CEO Doug Price.
