Denver’s Neal Baer (“Under the Dome,” “L&O: SVU,” “ER”) to be honored
From The Denver Post:
Neal Baer
Denver’s Neal Baer, writer-producer-educator-author-filmmaker-philanthropist and physician, continues to add professional hats, hyphens and honors.
On Feb. 21 he’ll be in Denver conducting a Q&A at the local premiere of his documentary about new approaches to education, “If You Build It,” following the 7:30 p.m. show at the Mayan Theater.
The next week, Baer will be honored by City Year Denver for his contributions on health, education and other issues involving youth. “I am committed to finding ways to keep kids in school,” he said. He’ll be honored on Feb. 27 for work that he does, beyond his financial contributions.
Baer is known to TV viewers as the executive producer of “Under the Dome” and previously “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and the epic hit, “ER.” In addition to those credits, Baer is active in numerous social causes, notably education. He has taught every level from third grade to grad school, including college (Harvard). At the moment he’s teaching at UCLA in The Global Media Center for Social Impact.
A graduate of Colorado College where he serves as a trustee, Baer taught elementary school in the Cherry Creek school district. He is active with College Track, a national program now launched in Aurora, which prepares students of color for college, and with the Point Foundation, a national LGBTQ scholarship fund. He has written extensively for teens on health issues such as teen pregnancy, AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse, and nutrition. The themes turn up often in his television work.
Meanwhile, back to fiction. He dropped a hint about the coming season of “Under the Dome,” due June 30 on CBS. “Stephen King wrote the first episode” of season 2, Baer said. “It’s bigger, bolder than last season. In the first five minutes you see the demise of one character; two die in the first episode. No one is safe.” Note, here’s a hint about the hint: Natalie Martinez, who plays Sheriff Linda, was recently cast in ABC’s “Secrets & Lies.”
The City Year announcement:
City Year Denver, a nonprofit organization that recruits young adults to serve as full time tutors, mentors and role models in high-need Denver public schools, will honor 7 time Emmy-nominated writer, producer and Colorado-native, Neal Baer, M.D., at its Red Jacket Gala on February 27, 2014 at 6:00 pm at the Grand Hyatt Denver.
