Televangelist and TRINITY BROADCASTING NETWORK founder PAUL CROUCH did SATURDAY (11/30) in ORANGE, CA after a battle with heart disease. He was 79.
CROUCH started in radio as a student at CENTRAL BIBLE INSTITUTE AND SEMINARY in SPRINGFIELD, MO, where he helped build KCBI-A. He then worked as host and PD at KRSD-A and KRSD-TV/RAPID CITY, SD and, after a stint at ASSEMBLIES OF GOD in BURBANK, became GM at KREL-A/CORONA, CA and Dr. GENE SCOTT's KHOF-F and KHOF-TV/SAN BERNARDINO-LOS ANGELES. Founding TRINITY, he bought KLXA-TV/FONTANA-LOS ANGELES (now KTBN-TV/SANTA ANA-LOS ANGELES) in 1974 and built the TBN network on it the network now airs on broadcast stations across the country as well as on cable and satellite; he was the longtime host of the network's flagship show with wife JAN.
The network and the CROUCH family have recently been embroiled in controversy over allegations by CROUCH's granddaughter BRITTANY KOPER of TBN's overspending on salaries, mansions, jets and other luxuries, and counterallegations against the granddaughter.
