Denver media and political figure Don Friedman died Sunday at a hospice in Englewood after a long illness, his family said. He was 83.

A Republican, Friedman served a southeast Denver district for seven terms, from 1962 to 1976, in the Colorado House of Representatives and ran for Congress in 1976, losing to Pat Schroeder.

A month later, he was appointed to the Denver Water Board, but resigned in 1978 to run Apollo 13 pilot Jack Swigert's unsuccessful campaign for U.S. Senate.

Friedman was a well-known and often controversial talk-show host on Denver's KOA, KIMN and KTLN radio stations. When liberal talk-show host Alan Berg was killed by a white supremacist group in 1984, Friedman took over the slot at KOA, said his son, Glen Friedman.

"My father was very glib, very quick," he said. "He was absolutely controversial and didn't shy away from taking the stands he chose to take."

Friedman's funeral will be Tuesday at Fairmount Mortuary at 430 S. Quebec St. in Denver. The time was not finalized Sunday.

The family asked that memorials be made as contributions to The Bridge Project, which helps children in public housing neighborhoods, at 2148 S. High St., Denver, CO, 80208; The Denver Hospice, 501 S. Cherry St., Suite 700, Denver, CO, 80246; or a charity of the donor's choice.
