Default Some Denver newscasts suffer double-digit declines in viewership in November 2017 sweeps

    From The Denver Post: http://theknow.denverpost.com/2017/1...s-2017/168058/

Some Denver newscasts suffer double-digit declines in viewership in November 2017 sweeps
KUSA-Channel 9, while still the market leader, fell 28 percent at 10 p.m.

TV stations suffered market-wide, double-digit declines in late newscast viewership in the November 2017 ratings sweeps. The decline in people using television, a factor for a decade, continues.

“That’s something that’s scary for all of us,” KMGH news director Holly Gauntt said.

    All of Denver’s late newscasts lost viewers: KUSA-Channel 9, while still the market leader, was down 28 percent at 10 p.m. KDVR-Channel 31, was down 12 percent at 9 p.m., down 16 percent at 9:30 p.m. and down 16 percent at 10 p.m. KCNC-Channel 4 saw a 20 percent drop at 10 p.m. KMGH-Channel 7 dropped 22 percent at 10 p.m.

KUSA’s decline of 28 percent, down from a 3.09 rating last November to 2.23 this year, translates to a loss of nearly 15,000 viewers.

The chief reason for the decline is obvious: Digital devices continue to draw attention away from television as younger audiences desert the medium in droves. According to a September 2017 Pew Report, in a drastic change from a generation ago, “the internet substantially outpaces TV as a regular news source for adults younger than 50.”

It’s also possible that KUSA was hurt by the loss of a viewer favorite, longtime anchor Adele Arakawa, who left in June after 24 years on top of the ratings.

On the plus side, KUSA proved that patience is a virtue when it comes to “Next with Kyle Clark.” That non-traditional 6 p.m. news show had a resurgence in the ratings, beating the competition with a 2.26 rating.

KDVR-Channel 31 is on the rise, continuing a recent trend in the Denver TV ratings race. While KUSA-Channel 9 has been dominant for decades and remains No. 1, the Tribune-owned Fox affiliate “Fox31” finished a strong No. 2 in the November sweeps.

Starting last spring, when KDVR posted historic wins to become the No. 2 station behind long-time market leader KUSA, and continuing through the February sweeps when the station increased its momentum, KDVR has been flexing its muscle.

Ironically, the news director who oversaw the addition of newscasts and who deserves much of the credit for the turnaround is now at a competing station.

Gauntt left KDVR/KWGN Channel 2 for rival KMGH-Channel 7 this summer. Her departure, at a time of uncertainty for KDVR’s future ownership, signaled a nervous anticipation of the possible takeover by Sinclair Broadcasting. The takeover is expected in the first quarter of 2018; Sinclair is known as a politically conservative outfit that issues its stations nine “must-run” editorials a week.

(Gauntt was succeeded at KDVR/KWGN by Brian Gregory, formerly news director of the duopoly KWCH/KSCW/KDCU in Wichita, Kan.)

For November 2017, KDVR grew in key newscasts, beating KCNC and KMGH at 6 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and in late news. Fox31 at 11 a.m. was the only midday newscast to show growth.

    KUSA led at 10 p.m. with a 2.23 rating. KCNC held on to the No. 2 spot at 10 p.m., with a 1.02 rating. KMGH trailed with a 0.98 rating at 10 p.m. KDVR’s 9 p.m. newscast drew a 1.39 rating while KDVR at 10 drew a 0.92.

A telling statistic provided by KDVR: “November 2016 through November 2017, the combined ratings for all FOX31 newscasts increased 20 percent. In the same period, KMGH newscasts decreased 16 percent; KCNC newscasts decreased 19 percent; KUSA newscasts decreased 5 percent, and KTVD decreased 4 percent.”

“Our continued growth and strong audience numbers confirm that our viewers trust FOX31 to cover the most important news across our community,” KDVR news director Gregory said in a statement.

Denver viewers favored Lester Holt on NBC (KUSA) among the evening network news anchors. Jimmy Fallon on NBC (KUSA) was tops locally for late night comedy.

The three most popular prime time shows in the market during November were all on CBS: “The Big Bang Theory” followed by “Young Sheldon” (the spinoff of “Big Bang”), followed by “60 Minutes.” But KCNC couldn’t use that lead-in advantage from CBS to boost its late news numbers.

The Denver market, 17th largest in the country, counts nearly 1.6 million homes. When measuring adults 25-54, the standard TV news audience, 1 rating point in Denver equals 15,950 viewers.
