Default KOA Host Steffan Tubbs Arrested In Domestic Dispute Update: Steffan Is No Longer At KOA

    From KDVR:

A Denver radio host was arrested for domestic violence on Sunday, the Denver Police Department said.

KOA news radio host Steffan Tubbs has been a regular fixture on the station's morning news show for nearly 12 years.

Tubbs was arrested by Denver police at 9:50 a.m. Sunday morning at Platform At Union Station apartments at 1650 Wewatta St. in downtown Denver. He has been charged with domestic violence, disturbance via phone.

The 48-year-old has made a career in Denver radio, sharing news, information and occasional zaniness with listeners.

"Over text. But he does say he's on his way to her apartment," a dispatcher said on the Radio Reference website.

"She's inside the apartment. He does have a conceal and carry permit, usually keeps a 9-millimeter in his car," the dispatcher said.

Legal expert David Beller said the charge means a suspect is accused of using a telephone to harass a victim.

"Certainly saying terrible and harassing things to somebody via text message could be disturbance by telephone. It's difficult to know the exact words based on the arrest alone. But certainly this was not a friendly hello," Beller said.

He said Colorado is a mandatory arrest state. So if police are called and there’s probable cause, someone is going to jail.

Then, a mandatory restraining order is put in place barring contact with the victim and her contacts.

A suspect must also appear before a judge before being allowed to bond out of jail.

"The law wants to allow a cooling-off period. The last thing the law wants is an individual to be immediately released from custody while emotions and anxiety and tensions are still running high," Beller said.

KOA had no comment on the arrest.

KOA NewsRadio announced Thursday that host Steffan Tubbs will no longer be part of their morning news program.

Steffan Tubbs was arrested on July 30 and has pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges.

Tubbs, 48, has been a regular fixture on the station’s morning news show for nearly 12 years.

“Steffan Tubbs will no longer be part of Colorado’s Morning News on KOA. We appreciate all of his contributions during his time with us and wish him well,” Tim Hager with iHeartMedia stated. “The morning show will continue on schedule with April Zesbaugh and guest host Ed Greene beginning the week of 8/14.”

Tubbs has been charged with domestic violence, disturbance via phone.

Legal expert David Beller said the charge means a suspect is accused of using a telephone to harass a victim.

Tubbs’ attorney stated in court that the alleged victim has two domestic violence cases pending where she is listed as the defendant and Tubbs is listed as the victim.

A judge agreed to release Tubbs on $250 bond, but ordered enhanced supervision — meaning he will have to check in with someone.

The judge granted an order of protection for the alleged victim, which is mandatory. Tubbs is required to stay 100 yards away from the victim and cannot have any contact. He was also required to relinquish his firearms.

Tubbs also signed a waiver of extradition in case he flees the jurisdiction.

On Wednesday, Tubbs’ attorney filed a motion asking for permission to travel between Aug. 11 and 17, which the judge granted.

The disposition hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 15.

The jury trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 18.
