Internet Killed The Shortwave Star: Radio Canada Sackville, NB, Broadcaster Shuts Down
The high-powered shortwave transmitters used to broadcast CBC’s international radio service (RCI) to the world have been permanently shut down due to a “world wide decline in shortwave use.”
“Shortwave defines a specific frequency band,” Martin Marcotte, director of CBC Transmission, said in a telephone interview. “It used in international broadcasting because it can travel thousands of kilometers.”
Shortwave radio has been used for broadcasting voice and music programming, but also long-distance communication to ships and aircraft or to keep in touch with remote areas.
