92.9 Translator to be donated to Denver Open Media
There are several changes going on with Open Media Foundation/Denver Open Media (DOM) Radio, which premiered two years ago as 100-watt KOMF-LP, an LPFM station on 104.7FM.
In January the station moved from 104.7 to a 92.9 translator as part of a deal to solve an interference problem. This week, translator owner 4-K’s LLLP filed with the FCC to donate the translator to DOM.
4-K’s also owns an FM Translator on 104.7 on Lookout Mountain, hosting "Mile High Sports". When KOMF signed on 104.7 in June 2016, there was interference between the two stations west of downtown Denver. Neither station was happy and the FCC was no help in providing a solution.
In 2018, 4-K’s and DOM reached a complicated but creative solution, with the help of a third party – KUVO(FM) jazz 89.3. DOM agreed to surrender its LPFM license for 104.7, and to feed its’ programming to KUVO to fill their HD3 channel. 4-K’s used another translator they owned on 92.9FM to relay the KUVO-HD3, with 92.9 being donated to DOM. The transition is nearly complete. DOM Radio is now interference-free on 92.9, at 99 watts from its’ 300-foot tower in the River North Art District. 4-K’s no longer has any fringe interference on 104.7 from KOMF and changed their antenna to better cover central Denver.
This mess wouldn’t have happened if the FCC didn't allow FM translators to park right on the doorsteps of LPFM stations, but that’s another story.
I’m on the steering committee for DOM Radio, all-volunteer community radio which broadcasts all-Denver music and other content. It’s now heard on 92.9FM, KUVO-HD3, and online at: https://www.radio.net/s/kuvohd3
