iHeartMedia Buys KCKK's 93.7FM (93-7 The Rock) Translator
From All Access:
HUNT BROADCASTING LLC is selling K229BS/LAKEWOOD, CO to iHEARTMEDIA's CITICASTERS LICENSES, INC. for $1.8 million. The primary station will be Sports KDSP-A (ORANGE AND BLUE 760)/DENVER.

"93.7 The Rock" is going away after 5 years.
Hunt Broadcasting is keeping KCKK 1510AM and their 92.9FM Boulder translator with this deal.
I wonder if they will sell these too? Or get another Denver-metro FM translator for KCKK instead?
The Hunt's bought 1510AM and 93.7FM for $1.6 Million in December 2013 and closed in March 2014 when they debuted their current AC format.
93.7FM could be where iHeart puts their "Breeze" Soft AC format which is currently on 106.7FM HD-2 with voice tracking for the Denver signal... or keep 760AM its primary station and move that station towards a more general talk format... or something else... stay tuned.
-
Very sorry to see this happen. I enjoyed listening to The Rock's wide music mix, and was hoping the Hunt family could make a go of it, however low expense/low profit it may have been. I wonder what they will do now with the AM & Boulder translator, I can't believe either has much audience. And it will be interesting to see what iHeart does with 760/93.7 now. More syndicated talk (Freedom760)? sigh.....
-
I love how there are all these small translators for KOA and Comedy 103.1, etc. I can't pick up either clearly in Parker or Castle Rock. Seems like a bastardized idea to get KOA and now perhaps 760 a pea shooter FM for select metro area listeners.
-
The best translator signals in Denver in terms of coverage are 103.1FM and 93.7FM. The rest seem to not be as good. 104.7FM has recently completed an upgrade that has also put themselves up there. But they are so limited compared to full signal stations and always will be.
760 already has a license for a translator for 99.9FM in Denver that they have not put into operation.
https://fccdata.org/?lang=en&facid=202548
So that's still another option for iHeart to use or to sell. It doesn't have the coverage 93.7FM does.
It will be interesting what plans KCKK/Hunt Broadcasting has in the future. If they have a deal for another translator or not. Or if they will just sell the rest and get out of the biz. Interesting they aren't promoting on the air about 93.7FM going away and still using the "93-7 The Rock" liners. And not steering people to the 1510AM frequency or another one if they are getting another FM translator. Kinda makes me think they are just going to let 93.7FM change without a word.
I guess the deal to sell 93.7FM was signed over a week ago... on May 3rd. Filed on the 10th with the FCC.
Once the FCC approves the transfer, iHeart gets the 93.7FM translator within 10 days.
-
If Hunt gets out, who would buy that 1510-AM? it's a troublesome frequency.
I wonder about the translator on 99.1 that broadcasts KGNU-AM1390. It's located on the KGNU tower near Hampden & Sante Fe, is directional to the north, and is never promoted by KGNU on-air or on their website. Is this just a placeholder for a future sale?
-
Vic Michael (Mountain Community Translators, Cedar Cove Broadcasting, etc.) owns that translator at 99.1FM. KGNU may only be a placeholder for the signal.
It only covers a small part of the metro area. I've never been able to pick it up driving on the north, south and east end of the metro. I always get KUAD on 99.1FM.
None of these translators are worth much unless they can get their stick onto the mountain to have better coverage. Then if they share a frequency with a full power station in Ft. Collins or Colorado Springs, they will also have big issues getting decent coverage.
Vic's companies have been good about doing what upgrades would be allowed by the FCC. They used to own the translators at 103.1FM, 93.7FM, 94.1FM, 104.7FM, etc...

I always thought the function of these things was for translator origination or not much more than extortion; wait until you were blocking someone elses' upgrade or move and get paid to go away.

So it looks like "Freedom 93-7" is coming...

Nice find. I am swinging towards them doing The Breeze on 93.7FM. They have voice tracking on the 106.7FM HD-2 "The Breeze" that is custom to Denver now... so it is ready to go. And they can keep the existing KCKK listeners, since the format isn't too different. Who knows though. LOL
-
How long does it usually take for the FCC to approve a sale like this? What is the best estimate when iHeart will take over the 93.7 frequency?
-
I would say in 3-4 months from when they filed.
"The Breeze" is no longer on 106.7FM HD-2. They took the HD-2 channel totally down.

I have been thinking about this alot? I have been wondering? Why in the world would Iheartradio go for Hunts broadcasting main translator? Why not go after someone else's translator? Why would Janice do this for? She just celebrated 5 yrs of being on the air, and all of the sudden she does this!?!? Why? It makes really no sense what so ever?
There are other translator's around Denver that Iheartmedia could have bought, so why her's?
She is going to loose alot of listeners and advertisers to! The 92.9 signal is weak, since The bear is on that same frequency. It's just broadcasting to Boulder only and no where else? No one is going to listen to 1510 at all! To sell her main signal, how dumb is that to do?
Oh and next week is the deadline on that closing of 93.7..

iHeart probably bought it because it was for sale - nobody else is selling their translators (that we know of) and 93.7FM has decent coverage.
How do you know that next week is the deadline for closing? I think it will take much longer for the FCC to approve it.
-
Ok, I think I misread that post on pg one.
Why in the world would Janice sell her main singal?
She just signed a death warrant for her station.
Once this is done she well loose listeners and advertisers.
No one well listen to AM!
This is a very dumb move on her part.

Maybe the signal is worth more than the revenue its bringing in? If it's not making the money and you can cash out, might as well go for it. Can't run a business at a loss for fun.

We all know how she made The ROCK from day one? An afforable radio station for local advertisers.. Plus, I always took her to be some what on the wealthy side? Who has that kind of cash to buy out a radio signal and a it's tower? She has to be well off in order to do that? It's not like she is strap for cash?
Even though she has fired alot of people in the past?
She has to be wealthy.

We have no idea about anyone's wealth. They could've taken every dollar they had and then some for this business.
You just don't know.
The fact is it's VERY expensive to own and run a radio station... even more for one that is independent from having the advantages of a cluster or a corporation who can bankroll a lot more things. Or can afford undercut the competition in ad rates for longer.
I have big respect that they were able to do it for 5 years. The market is very competitive.
They may have had to sell the translator to stay in business enough just to keep the 1510AM signal going or pay off existing loans. We just don't know their situation or plans.
I do know as a person who went all in on a station in the past, I bet they didn't make the decision to sell 93.7FM lightly since I bet they poured their hearts and souls into "The Rock".
Hopefully they will be able to get another FM translator or two in place and keep going after the transfer of 93.7FM happens. We will just have to see what happens.
It sucks that things have changed so much in the last 20-30 years in radio where we are losing most of the independent radio station owners. Consolidation and the whole Telcom '96 bill didn't make radio better in my opinion.

Yeah I know, I just figured she was well off.. I mean who can afford to dish out $1.6 million to buy a radio station back then? To start her own and to run it as a local business and to give local business a chance?
I am sure it was not any easy decision to sell 93.7 translator at all? I am just disappointed that she has not said anything on air to the listners that she worked so hard to get?
She can't upgrade the 92.9 one because it's between The Bear and The Peak in Colorado Springs! No one well listen to it on AM (you and I know that to).
To find another translator to use? That is doubtful, there isn't that many left and not enough room on the FM dial!
If she could do is? Turn it into an online radio station? That might work or not?
Yeah I know but do keep in mind that Iheartmedia is also in Financial ruins to! She could have just sold the 92.9 to Iheart.. She didn't

The FCC granted the application for the sale of 93.7 FM to iHeart on June 20th.
-
Slightly off topic but also I don't know if this is related to anything or a concidence. But Hal Moore had his last show today on KCKK according to a video on The Rock's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/937Therock/...8714927049519/

So depending on the plan between the Hunts and iHeart (which isn't public), iHeart could be running it any time now.
With Hal's departure, it looks like sooner than later.

So long to the Rock! Janice is going to make tons of people mad! She should have sold off the whole station instead of the translator! Why she would do this?
What a dumb move she made, she built up a great station that was needed and she does this right after her anniversary of The ROCK! Why to go with Janice!
-
I just looked at Radio-locator.com and saw that Iheart did rename the station as KDFD.
So it seems like the change is happening now???
-
Ok starting this monday, Hal Moore made the announcment. That is when Iheart well take over 93.7.

ok ok old news there! Now for the latest info
We all know now that 93.7 has been taken over for Iheartradi,
Another sad news... Baby Hall has called it quits more like retirement, so that means no morning shows ever. I doubt it if she well be able to find anyone now that she sold that translmitter to Iheart. She is going go loose so much from that stupid sale.

93.7 FM is still simulcasting KCKK. What time Monday is the iHeart takeover of 93.7 FM happening? As of 8am Monday, it hasn't happened...

Huh? Yet the late late Hal been telling everyone to go to AM. (If that ever happened). I doubt it if anyone would tune into 1510 whenever Iheartradio decides to take over 93.7 signal? Makes the question? Did this sale ever happen? Does Iheartradio even have that signal? Yes, why would Janice do this? She just cut her own throat with this? She has actually killed her station. Who would listen to AM?!?! Who? I think most of the people would switch to streaming the station now? Since they most likely have it in their head that 93.7 is taken over? I see most of her accounts well dissapear, who would want to keep their business on an AM station now that has a weak signal?
-

It is sad to see him go, now Hal is go and The ROCK moved in! I wonder if he is doing double duty now? This was not a good business move for Janice. What was she thinking?
-
According to the KCKK Facebook page, Tomorrow Morning (Wednesday 7/3), KCKK will drop the 93.7FM simulcast. iHeart must have something in the works for a pending format flip of KDFD 760AM on Wednesday morning.

I didn't see anything like that on their FB page?? So Wednesday huh? I hope someone on here well tell us all on what they hear on 93.7 then?
or they could put that PRIDE radio on 93.7? Ever thought about that?

On the Visitor posts section of their FB someone asked when they would be dropping the Simulcast from 93.7 and to only be on 92.9 FM and 1510 AM that's where they said that tomorrow morning they would just be on 1510 and the 92.9 translator.

That is what Jimmy rock announced on Saturday to.
He told everyone to go to 1510. The sale did not happen or what?

Interesting KCKK isn't running promos getting people to move to 1510 AM and that the 93.7 FM option will be going away. I would've been doing that for 2-4 weeks before the change. It's a HUGE oversight.
Unless their deal with iHeart doesn't allow them to, and the Breeze will be on 93.7FM...
iHeart could even put Pride radio (like Radiodude mentioned) or anything on 93.7FM that is on an HD channel they own or whatever 760 AM ends up being.
Because we aren't sure what will happen until it does, I have moved the posts mostly concerning 93.7FM's status and news to the 93.7FM thread.
I'll certainly post what is on 93.7FM tomorrow morning.

Well that would make more sense since they changed call letters to more represent the word freedom? KDFD? Also keep this in mind? Iheart is also actively spreading their "PRIDE RADIO" around to.
They could also put Pride on 93.7 to?
-
The other thing about KCKK (The Rock), in addition to not running on-air promos like they should to let listeners know that 93.7FM is going away and to tune to 1510AM, is that 1510therock.com is not registered. Their only web site is based on the 937 frequency.
And they haven't changed any of their graphics to remove the 93.7 from them.
Their station liners ARE saying 1510 and not 93.7. So there's that.
I find it all very strange.
Will they go dark?
I guess we will find out soon how things will shake out. Stay tuned as they say!
