From Radio Insight:
Two weeks after launching Christian Hip Hop “Kingdom 107.1” KFCO Bennett/Denver CO, Pillar Media dropped all references to the brand on Friday.
The station is now operating just under its call letters as “KFCO 107.1“. KFCO had debuted its new “Kingdom” brand on Thursday, April 4 following Pillar Media’s acquisition of it from Max Media.
While the reasoning behind the quick rebrand is unknown, a quick trademark search shows that “Kingdom FM” and “Kingdom Radio” are trademarked by Airwaves for Jesus, Inc. for use on their “91.5 Kingdom FM” WJYO Fort Myers FL. If so, this would be the second time in its history that KFCO was forced to quickly rebrand following a format change. When Max Media first launched its Classic Hip Hop format in December 2014, it did so as “Fly 107.1” before quickly shifting to “Flo 107.1“.

From Radio Insight:
Alpha Media Hip Hop “104.9 The Beat” KBTE Program Director and afternoon host ‘Amy O’ Garza was killed this weekend in a motorcycle accident in San Antonio at the age of 44.
Garza had been with KBTE since 2009 previously working in promotions and sales before rising to PD. A native of Laredo, she began her career in her hometown and Austin at Border Media between 2001 and 2009. WOAI-TV reports that she was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle driving on US 90 around 2:00am on Saturday when a pickup truck sideswiped the motorcycle and was pronounced dead on the scene. KCBD-TV adds that neither rider of the motorcycle were wearing helmets and that the pickup driver fled the scene. The driver of the motorcycle is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
Alpha Media Lubbock SVP/Market Manager Jay Richardson St. released a statement commenting, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Amy. It is rare to find a person as passionate as she was to her career and community. I had the opportunity to work with Amy for the last 14 years and she was the face and energy behind 104.9 The Beat. It is impossible to replace what she brought to our organization and to the people of Lubbock.”
Garza’s brother ‘Johnny O’ Olivares is also a longtime personality and programmer best known for his 17 year run as PD/morning host at iHeartMedia Rhythmic CHR “Wild 104” KBFM McAllen TX from 2004-2021. He has also spent time in Corpus Christi and Houston.

With Cumulus Media CHR “92 Pro-FM” WPRO-FM Providence morning host Daniel ?Giovanni? Centofanti set to retire on Monday, April 29, the station has announced its plans to celebrate their outgoing morning host after 50 years at the station this weekend.
WPRO-FM will celebrate their 50th anniversary as being a Top 40 station this weekend with a ?Gio Takeover Weekend? on Saturday, April 27 from 9am to 2pm and Sunday, April 28 from 12 to 2pm. The specials will feature “some of the biggest hits that the station broke worldwide” such as Britney Spears’ “Baby, One More Time”, Giovanni’s memories, and celebratory messages for Gio and the station from colleagues, artists, celebrities and more. The station
Giovanni’s final show on Monday, April 29 coincides with the actual 50th anniversary of WPRO-FM flipping to Top 40 in 1974. Giovanni joined the station that year as a programming assistant and fill-in host. He would rise through the ranks spending time in every daypart except afternoons and had a long run as Production Director before moving to mornings in 1999. He would be paired with Kim Zandy until her exit last year when Bekah Burger moved over from sister Rhythmic ?Hot 106? WWKX.
Giovanni commented, “WPRO-FM has been my home for 50 years, but I chose April 29th*for my final show as that is the day in 1974 that we became a Top 40 station. It has been an honor to play the hits all these years, work with amazing teammates and, most of all, get to know all our wonderful listeners in Southern New England! Radio may have changed in 50 years but what has not is the amazing connections that we make in our communities, and that is what I will miss the most.*It?s been an honor to be behind the mic and play the hits for 50 years at 92PRO-FM. I am the luckiest guy in radio!”
Cumulus Providence/New London RVP/Market Manager Holly Paras stated, ?As we celebrate 50 years of Top 40 radio on 92PRO-FM, I want to express my gratitude to Giovanni for his commitment to this radio station for its entire run, providing entertaining and fun content and most importantly, for the connection he?s made with our community. I wish Gio the very best in his retirement.?

Following Friday’s cut of Annaliese Lemieux-Kaplan, Max Media Country “97.3 The Eagle” WGH-FM Newport News/Norfolk VA has announced lineup changes.
Longtime station personality Karen West will move to mornings, while Barry McKay joins as midday host.
West has been with WGH-FM since just after its flip to Country in 1990, added Music Director duties in 2020, and rose to Assistant Program Director in August 2022. She stated, ?After many years in the midday slot, I’m thrilled about this new chapter in my career! I?m excited for this fresh start, which brings limitless opportunities to unleash my creativity!?
McKay, a longtime radio veteran, previously spent over twelve years as Program Director of Audacy Hot AC “94.9 The Point” WPTE in the market from 2005-17. He remained locally based, while tracking remotely for Audacy AC “Magic 106.3” WSPA-FM Greenville SC until its flip at the start of this month. McKay also spent time on-air and programming in Cumberland MD, Baltimore, Houston, Richmond, Seattle, and Wichita.
He stated, “It’s an absolute thrill to reconnect with all the amazing listeners in Hampton Roads! I’m beyond excited to be back on the airwaves at this amazing heritage station. A huge shoutout to the incredible team at Max Media for providing me with this incredible opportunity and I can’t wait to spend our workday together, so buckle up y?all, let the good times roll!”
Max Media Hampton Roads VP/Market Manager Keith Barton remarked, ?Karen has been a mainstay for country radio in our market for more than 3 decades. It is natural for her to wake up with our listeners every weekday morning. Her move to mornings created a great opportunity for a Hampton roads radio veteran like Barry to move to the midday slot on Eagle. We are very excited for them both as well as our listeners!?

From Radio Insight:
Magnum Media has completed the move of “Bucky Country” 95.9 WBKY from Portage WI to Stoughton where it will now cover the Janesville market and has added translator coverage on 99.5 W258CM Madison fed by 107.3 WSJY-HD4 Fort Atkinson.
Owner David Magnum says the move to Stoughton started twenty one years ago stating, “My two sons, Reid and Ty, were just lads when we started this process. Whenever we reminisce about the umpteen Town and County zoning meetings and hearings, we make sure to have a stout beer in hand.? The company noted that the combination of the two analog signals provides in-car coverage from Arlington to Beloit.
With the move from Portage (where it also served Baraboo and Wisconsin Dells) to Stoughton, the station creates a new Janesville Country competitor to CMC Media’s 104.5 WSLD and the translator becomes the third Country signal in Madison joining iHeartMedia’s “96.3 Star Country” WMAD and Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s “Q106” WWQM. The translator had been rebroadcasting 107.3 WSJY’s primary AC format.

From Radio Insight:
Rob & Joss Taylor will debut in mornings on Lotus Communications AC “94.9 Mix-FM” KMXZ Tucson on Monday, April 22.
The husband/wife duo will be heard weekdays from 5-9am. They most recently hosted mornings at Audacy AC 96.5 KYXY San Diego until exiting last November. The duo joined KYXY in February 2019 before moving to sister Classic Hits ?Sunny 98.1? KXSN in February 2020. They would then move back to KYXY in January 2021. Prior to their arrival in San Diego, Rob & Joss spent thirteen years in mornings at Country ?Froggy 92.9? KFGY and two and a half at Country ?Q105? KRPQ both in Santa Rosa CA.
The duo state, “We are so thrilled to be working with the team at Arizona Lotus. We have the opportunity
to really connect with the Tucson community at a great radio station and with a company that believes in the
things that make local radio great. HUGE thanks to Gary Berkowitz, Debbie Wagner and Larry Mac ? you have
made this step in our radio journey incredible/”
Lotus Tucson Operations and Program Director Larry Mac says, “We’re excited to introduce ‘Rob & Joss In The Morning’ to the 94.9 MIXfm team in Tucson, where their unique dynamic as a married couple will infuse each show with an extra layer of warmth and relatability. Their life together is the perfect prep for a morning show that will wake up the Old Pueblo in a fun and personal way.?
General Manager Debbie Wagner adds, ?We are excited to welcome the engaging duo of Rob and Joss to 94.9 Mix FM mornings. Their show is genuine, entertaining and fun which we think the Tucson community will enjoy tuning in to at the start of their day.”
The duo succeed Mike Rapp and Nikki West in mornings at KMXZ. West departed at the end of 2023 to relocate out of state. No word yet on how this affects Rapp.

From Radio Insight:
When Ross Davies was attending Radiodays Europe, this year?s edition of which was held in Munich last month, he e-mailed a favorite quote from one of the speakers about the year?s hot topic, the role of AI in radio. ?It?s an exciting time to be scared shitless.?
Broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada already have the scared-shitless part down. Davies is looking to bring the excitement to the second Radiodays North America, scheduled for Toronto June 2-4. RDNA is a companion to Canadian Music Week, Canada?s equivalent of SXSW, under longtime head Neill Dixon. The first RDNA agenda stood out for its willingness to ask hard questions: ?Has PPM measurement been worth it? Can radio handle the truth??
This year, Ross on Radio will again highlight ?The Road to RDNA? with a look at scheduled highlights from the sessions, as well as longer pieces on some of the planned topics. Highlights so far include keynoter/BBC Radio head of music Lorna Clarke, promotions guru Paige Nienaber, and a TikTok panel featuring Lauren Hunter, known for one of the best promotions of recent years. (I?ll be part of a panel on the evolution of Classic Hits.)
?The Road to RDNA ?24? begins this week with a conversation with Davies ? what he saw at RDE and what he envisions for Toronto this year.
SEAN ROSS: You?re one of Canada?s most prominent radio programmers. Please tell readers a little about your background and how it led to the evolution of RDNA.*
ROSS DAVIES: My father was in the radio business in Canada, and so I essentially was raised all around radio growing up.* Living in Montreal, listening to AM top 40 radio like CKGM and at night WABC and some of the big US top 40 stations was all I needed to know that’s where I wanted to be.**
My father got me my first job in Vancouver, B.C., at CKLG (now CFOX), working as a student intern.* I did everything there, from scrubbing carts to operating, music library and ultimately on the air as the all-night jock at CKLG-FM, one of the first free-form progressive rock stations back in the early ?70s.* I knew quickly that I was better “off the air” than on, and that sent me into the programming area.**
I got my first PD gig in Calgary, launching CJAY 92.* Ultimately my goal was to get to Toronto and work for CHUM Radio.* I got there in 1979 and worked my way up to eventually become Operations Manager and Program Director for both CHUM and CHUM-FM, then into corporate as VP Programming.* I held a similar position at Astral Media, then was hired to launch XM Satellite Radio’s Canadian channels in the early 2000s.
Once I decided to take a step back from the day-to-day radio business, and knowing I still had gas left in the tank, I wanted to keep doing things for the broadcast industry to help keep it moving forward. Broadcasters asked if I could help our national radio conference. As you know, I’m a big fan of Radiodays Europe.* I’ve always felt this conference was way more forward-leaning compared to the conferences here in North America.* I thought this would be a great way to bring some of that to broadcasters in Canada and the U.S.* As a result, we are now entering our second year of Radiodays North America, bringing a much-needed global presence here in North America.
SEAN: Let’s talk a little about the role that RDNA is trying to play at a time when there are fewer radio conventions in North America overall.
DAVIES: As you know, our industry here has been under a lot of pressure these past few years.* Declining audiences, new unlicensed digital operators, and advertising revenue declines.* The competition has intensified dramatically.* I think we in radio got stuck looking inside, got focused on cost cutting, doubling and tripling the workload on our staff, just trying to stay alive and hold on to those great profit margins.**
As a result, we didn’t move forward.*Europe was talking about digital audio and podcasting before it was even on our radar.* They celebrate radio there, and their annual conventions show that.* And they can bring on a wealth of talent from all the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia ? some very brilliant people.* Our conventions lacked that.
SEAN: What impressed you at Munich this year?
DAVIES: Radiodays Munich set an all-time attendance record of over 1,500 delegates.*It was three full days of content touching on virtually every aspect of the audio business.*The subject of AI was an overwhelming presence at the conference, so much so that RDE built in an additional AI Summit on the Sunday before the full conference started.* During the two full conference days, there were a number of additional AI sessions that were all standing-room-only.**
I heard lots of excitement, lots of opportunities, and lots of concerns about AI.* We are all still in the early stages of how best to implement this into our operations. Concerns around AI deep fakes and AI bias were talked about at length, as well as getting the right balance between humanity and machines. There were concerns about detection tools, synthetic voices, voice cloning.
New strategies and new mechanisms to reach new audiences with moderator Martin Liss was SRO.**There were multiple sessions on youth audiences. There was a great morning-show interview with Greg James from BBC Radio 1 and a separate Aled Haydn Jones presentation about Gen Z. Nik Goodman?s ?How to be a better program director? was done in the round to a packed room. And a couple of sessions from Australian radio, where business in booming.* We plan to bring a lot of this to Toronto in June.
SEAN: Over the course of the next 7-8 weeks, we’re going to talk about all the panels in some form, but please tell readers about a few now that you’re particularly excited about.
DAVIES: We’ve secured a great opening keynote on Monday morning with the Head of BBC Music, Lorna Clarke.* What a great resume!* BBC has their hands in everything music-related: over-the-air radio, BBC Sounds , television specials, and outdoor events.* There’s clearly something we can glean from all that.**
We’ve also developed three different sessions all around AI.* Matt Britton will be here talking about AI and Gen Z, we have an open and frank AI Round Table planned, and we’re conducting an AI Workshop, where the audience will be involved with creating an AI Radio Station.* And we’ve really stepped up on podcasting this year: We have a Sunday ?Podcast Power Up Summit? scheduled for those relatively new to the podcast business, which will involve people like James Cridland and Eric Nuzum.
SEAN: We?ve just come out of Podcast Movement. There are a lot of podcasting seminars these days. What’s RDNA’s unique take on podcasting, especially for broadcasters?
DAVIES: It’s real and it’s an opportunity. There are right ways about going about it and wrong ways.* One of the sessions Eric Nuzum is going to do is called* “Why Podcasts Fail”.* At the same time, we’ve got sessions on how to grow revenue through podcasts.* This applies both to the “pure podcasters” and the large broadcast organizations who have jumped into the podcast pool.
SEAN: Finally, what are some of the lessons of RDNA ?23 in terms of how the first one is shaping this one, and what’s going to be even better this year?
DAVIES: We had great feedback from last year’s event, perhaps best explained by this comment from Coleman Insights? Warren Kurtzman:*?Radiodays North America ?23 was nothing short of a smashing success. In fact, it was so good that I am writing this as I fly home from Toronto with renewed energy for our business, and I feel compelled to tell everyone ? and especially my clients and colleagues in the American radio business ? to set aside the time and budget to attend Radiodays North America in 2024.?
This speaks to our need to get the word out to our colleagues in the U.S.* This is a real learning conference and one that you will come away from inspired and full of energy.* And you’ll get to visit one of North America’s greatest and most diverse cities. And the U.S. dollar is worth roughly 30% more than the Canadian dollar.
A full RDNA agenda (so far) is available here. See hotel information here.
