“Ed, Downloaded”
Here comes a new kind of hybrid. In entertainment and technology circles there has been talk of “convergence” for a couple of decades. In theater, there was talk of “multimedia” since before the first “happening.” Now comes a giant leap forward toward true multimedia convergence in “Ed, Downloaded,” the play by Michael Mitnick with video design by the Denver Center’s Charlie Miller and directed by Sam Buntrock, at the Ricketson Theatre through Feb. 17.
This is convergence of a new sort, the meeting of video and stagecraft in complementary roles. The video never feels like a gimmick, it’s an integral part of the play.
The play’s theme is a clever take on technology’s future possibilities: what happens when high tech bumps up against mankind’s desire for immortality? What if the delete button and edit function could be applied to human memory? It’s also a face-off between left brain, right brain; the scientific mind and the emotional free spirit.
Multimedia used to mean slideshow + poetry + guitar. In “Ed, Downloaded,” live theater and video interact, moments are revisited and edited, memories are transposed to the screen and played back. The audience is multitasking–reviewing the past while witnessing the present and absorbing the changes. The images are massaged and overdubbed with new dialog and images, forming new meanings to which characters react in real time. It flows seamlessly, a simple interweaving of forms that’s more difficult to explain than to take in.
