In terms of ratings, as well as buzz, Sunday’s nailbiter delivered the highest Super Bowl metered market rating in history with a 49.7/72 overnight rating/share on NBC, according to The Nielsen Company.

Fully 72 percent of the country with TVs on was watching the Super Bowl on Sunday: The 49.7 rating, 72 share is four percent higher than last year’s game (47.6/70 for Super Bowl XLVIII on FOX, in which the Seahawks defeated the Broncos 43-8) and is three percent higher than the prior record (48.1/71 for Super Bowl XLVII on CBS; Ravens 34, 49ers 31).

Katy Perry in all her candy-colored. shark-dancing glory, beat Bruno Mars’ numbers for 2014. The halftime performance by Katy Perry (8-8:30 p.m. ET) delivered a 50.8/73 overnight, five percent ahead of last year’s 8-8:30 time period featuring Bruno Mars (48.6/71).

Overnight numbers in Denver showed a 53.7 rating, 79 share, tied with Indianapolis for the No. 8 most-attentive market.
