Everyone’s been telling us what to watch for on Election Night: which key races will be determinative, which state results may be predictive for 2016. But they’re not telling us what absence may be most telling on local TV.
Denver TV will be full of political analysts, pollsters and party representatives as the returns are tabulated. But female pundits will be notably absent.
Consultant and Democratic strategist Laura Chapin said, “in an election aimed at women voters, every single election night expert skedded for Denver TV is male. Blatant sexism and invisible women at its finest.”
Chapin has a long list of women she’d like to see on the air as political experts or commentators, local women with expertise. “I see a lot of hardworking women on the front lines of Colorado politics getting zero credit from Colorado TV, which defaults to men as experts.”
So far, judging by newspapers nationally, longtime Colorado pollster Floyd Ciruli seems to be the most-quoted pundit concerning local races. On Election Night, he’ll be on 9News along with two male party representatives.
We’ll keep and eye out. And regular anchorwomen don’t count. But the scene is likely to mirror that of the longstanding testosterone-heavy Sunday morning talk shows. If it’s Sunday and the subject is politics, TV is likely a parade of men in suits. If it’s Election Night in Denver, will we see more of the same?
