I think the Broncos losing the SuperBowl has had a BIG effect on the radio ratings for February!

Talk KOA 850 AM (down to 13th) and Sports KKFN 104.3 FM both drop - KKFN's lowest since June and it could be the lowest EVER for KOA. The lowest that I can remember. Sports KDSP 102.3 FM drops to its lowest in 2 years.

Rhy/CHR KQKS 107.5 FM, Alternative KTCL 93.3 FM and Country KYGO 98.5 FM all tie for 1st.

Modern AC KALC drops out of the top 5.

Spanish KJMN 92.1 FM, Urban Oldies KJHM 101.5 FM and Comedy K276FK 103.1 FM (KYGO 98.5 FM HD-2) all have their highest ratings 12+ ever.

Classic Hits KXKL 105.1 FM has their best ratings in over a year - since their big drop when they tried Christmas music at the end of 2012.

Nostalgia KEZW 1430 AM has its lowest ratings in recent history, if not ever.

Your thoughts on the ratings?

I'm most shocked about KOA and KEZW. Two solid AM stations with such a big drop. Did people just decide not to listen to AM radio anymore? It reminds me of 1980 when FM overtook AM in total number of listeners in Denver.

I totally agree. It's something that is happening here in Denver for sure... I think the FCC needs to expand the FM band and give the option for AM stations to move to FM.

With Clear Channel putting KOA on KRFX's HD-2, I thought for sure they would acquire an FM translator for it months ago.

If I was CC's market manager, an FM freq for KOA would be a high priority. I think more and more people are leaving AM for FM or satellite radio. But maybe CC Denver's budget from their headquarters keeps them from doing anything more right now.

Mile High Sports was able to get a translator quick on 94.1 FM. Vic Michael seems to always have one to lease. LOL

It looks like there's a translator at 99.9 FM for the Denver area that they could get. But it has pretty limited coverage due to stations in Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins being on the same frequency. CC owns the station in the Springs and could maybe modify its signal pattern.

I'm not aware of any other FM translators not being used that could cover any part of Denver at this point. But as we have seen with a few translators, there's a possibility of one being "moved" into town.

Another reason why KOA took a ratings hit is because of their schedule changes. They had to move some local shows around to accommodate the national ones that headquarters told them they had to carry live.

KEZW is also on KOSI's HD-2 channel. So they could also lease/buy an FM translator. But sadly, I think the reason their ratings are lower is because of their aging listeners. I'm not sure an FM translator would help them as much as it would help KOA.

All over the country, AM talk/sports stations are starting to move to FM.
Here's an article about how it's happening in South Florida: http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2013-10-03/news/fl-am-radio-stations-future-20131002_1_stations-sports-radio-fm

Lincoln was smart to move KKFN 104.3 FM to FM from 950 AM when they did.

actually, station spacing is based on station class and distance, (and co-channel, 1st, 2nd adjacent freqs ) not actual signal, nor pattern.

CC might be having an inter-office fight about the springs 99.9 taking a downgrade, or moving the transmitter.
see: http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/spacing/73215e.html (http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/spacing/73215e.html)

otherwise, it's a weird book. new panel, i'm guessing.
