Hendrik Sybrandy, a veteran of Denver TV news at 7News and, most recently, Fox31, will become the Denver correspondent for CCTV America (http://english.cctv.com/world/Americas/), the English-language news channel run by Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television. He will begin Feb. 3.
Sybrandy, along with a photographer, will comprise the first CCTV bureau locally, housed in the Rocky Mountain PBS building along with other international news correspondents (most working for Feature Story News, which provides talent, photographers and infrastructure). CCTV America is based in Washington, D.C.
“After 30 years, no more local news,” he said. Sybrandy’s May 2013 report (http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/tag/hendrik-sybrandy) of a man mistaken for a terrorist was denounced by a rival station as a hoax and ultimately retracted by Fox31.
Sybrandy’s new position is freelance but guaranteed at least 15 days a month. “It’s pretty much a full-time gig.”
He’ll work Super Bowl weekend for Fox31, “I might be in Larimer Square Sunday night” covering fan reaction, then put on a different hat to start CCTV on Monday. In general, he’ll report less crime, more issues that affect an international audience. “I imagine marijuana is going to be one of the topics of interest.”
The channel reaches some 100 million viewers in 120 countries and will begin live-streaming its shows in February.
