https://radioinsight.com/wp-content/images/2023/07/theroute-200x200.jpgWXXI Public Broadcasting Council relaunched AAA “Different Radio” 88.5 WRUR Rochester NY and 90.1 WITH Ithaca NY as “The Route (https://theroute.org/)” this morning.
Owned by the University of Rochester, WRUR previously featured a mix of Public News/Talk and AAA. With the need for the talk shows being aired on FM being eliminated by the launch of 105.9 WXXI-FM (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/252479/wxxi-rochester-launches-105-9-wxxi-fm/) in May, WRUR will continue to simulcast NPR’s Morning Edition until 9am but will then segue to music with the existing “Open Tunings” hosted by Scott Regan from 9am-12pm, while “The World Cafe” will move up from 2-4pm to 12-2pm.
Ryan Yarmel, who has hosted a weekly Thursday evening show since 2019, joins the station full-time as Music Director and afternoon host. “Afternoons with Yarms” will air from 2-6pm featuring “an eclectic mix of music — from rock to Americana, soul to folk, and acoustic to blues.”
90.1 WITH will continue to simulcast WRUR in most dayparts. When WRUR currently airs NPR’s Morning Edition from 6-9am, WITH will carry the BBC World Service and Democracy Now.

WXXI announced today that Different Radio will expand its format to offer more music and mark it with the launch of a new name. FM 88.5 (Rochester) and FM 90.1 (Ithaca) will now be known as The Route, with Ryan Yarmel as its music director. Yarmel, who has been the host of
