From Radio Insight:

Politico.com is reporting that Cumulus has decided not to renew its syndication contracts with Clear Channel’s Premiere Radio Networks for Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity when they expire at the end of the year.

The decision comes after negotiations between Cumulus and Premiere Networks, the division of Clear Channel that distributes Limbaugh and Hannity’s shows, broke down due to disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights, the source said. Cumulus is known to drive a hard bargain on costs, and Clear Channel is known to seek top dollar for big names.

As industry insiders caution, Cumulus and Clear Channel have come to the brink before during contract negotiations only to resume talks. But the source told POLITICO that Clear Channel was unlikely to reduce the cost for distribution rights to a level that would satisfy Cumulus.

This is a decision that has been expected for quite some time as both companies have made moves to prepare for this possible outcome. Cumulus began hiring possible replacement talent for its Conservative Talk stations in Geraldo Rivera, Mike Huckabee, and Michael Savage. Clear Channel purchased 710 WOR New York in order to have a possible affiliate for the hosts in market #1.

The move will affect about 40 stations across the country including major market affiliates such as 770 WABC New York, 890 WLS Chicago, 820/96.7 WBAP Dallas, 630/105.9 WMAL Washington, and 760 WJR Detroit that carry both shows and 790 KABC Los Angeles and 560 KSFO San Francisco that air Hannity.

Politico also reports that Cumulus has begun reaching out to agents and political insiders to begin filling the to-be vacated timeslots on the affected stations.

POLITICO's DYLAN BYERS is reporting that the long-simmering break between CUMULUS MEDIA and PREMIERE NETWORKS over RUSH LIMBAUGH and SEAN HANNITY has come to a head and that its sources tell the website that CUMULUS has decided to drop LIMBAUGH and HANNITY at the end of the year with the expiration of the company's contracts to carry the show.
BYERS says that the disagreement came down to "disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights."
BYERS also notes that the companies "have come to the brink before during contract negotiations only to resume talks" but that PREMIERE is "unlikely to reduce the cost for distribution rights to a level that would satisfy CUMULUS."

"CUMULUS is not in a position to comment about negotiations with talent under contract, no matter what the rumor of the day might be," a spokesperson for CUMULUS told BYERS. PREMIERE did not respond to BYERS' request for comment.
CUMULUS' LEW DICKEY has publicly blamed the LIMBAUGH-SANDRA FLUKE controversy for revenue problems at his company's talk stations, and a move in the NEW YORK market of LIMBAUGH and HANNITY's shows from CUMULUS Talk WABC-A to crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WOR-A has been widely assumed to be coming at the end of the year.

The latest scuttlebutt from industry insiders is that Rush Limbaugh will be staying with Cumulus stations when his current contract expires at the end of the year. The only exception is in New York City where Limbaugh will flip from WABC to Clear Channel's WOR-AM in a deal previously agreed upon. Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey had made statements indicating Limbaugh revenues were down and at least implying the end may be near for Cumulus and Rush. Politico reported that Limbaugh will most likely stay in "virtually" every market he has been on.

However, the number two man talk radio -- Sean Hannity -- will be leaving Cumulus. Both sides are said to be reporting that negotiations have ended. This was exacerbated by Michael Savege's recent on-air prediction that he would be taking over the Hannity slots on all of Cumulus affiliates. Surprising to some, it is Hannity who is reportedly refusing to sign with Cumulus saying he prefers being on Clear Channel stations.
