From Radio Insight: Tyler TX has lost its only locally originating Public Radio station as the University of Texas-Tyler ceased operations of 99.7 KVUT Cuney at 5pm today. KVUT launched in September 2020 following the University’s $120,000 purchase of the station. KVUT rimshot the Tyler portion of the Tyler/Longview market from the south and was one of three public stations in the market along with 90.1 KERA-FM Dallas’ translator on 100.1 K261CW Tyler and Louisiana State University Shreveport’s fellow rimshot ?Red River Radio? 100.7 KTYK Overton. KVUT programmed Public News/Talk programming by day and Jazz at night. UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences Dean Neil Gray stated, “This move aligns with our core mission and allows us to reinvest in our academic programming, offering more educational opportunities to students, particularly in our Department of Communication. I want to thank the KVUT team, donors and listeners for their support.” Gray then added, “Reinvesting in our students is crucial for fostering the next generation of communicators, journalists and media professionals. By reallocating resources, we can enhance our curriculum, provide cutting-edge technology and create hands-on learning experiences that prepare our students for the rapidly evolving media landscape.” more

From Radio Insight: The Stax Records story has been a well-chronicled one over the past 30 years: founder Jim Stewart?s disastrous deal that gave the label?s catalog to Atlantic, the integrated staff and musicians that found it harder to remain brothers-in-music after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Al Bell?s saturation of the market that returned the label to dominance in the early ?70s, followed by a devastating bankruptcy. There?s still something different about seeing the Stax story in Jamila Wignot?s Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,the four-part HBO documentary that premiered May 20. Booker T & the M.G.s? ?Green Onions? and Isaac Hayes? ?Theme from ?Shaft?? literally take form on screen. Carla Thomas, the Bar-Kays? James Alexander, and songwriter David Porter all get the starring turns that they deserve. Historical footage ? especially from the sanitation workers? strike ? puts Stax in more a vivid context. Eventually, the label?s early-?70s resurgence makes it not a partner to Memphis? business community, but a target. Stax?s footprint on Classic Hits and Adult R&B was disadvantaged by the label?s mid-?70s dissolution; even its last hits are well before the era now covered by either format. But Otis Redding?s ?(Sittin? on) The Dock of the Bay? never really faded with listeners ? as borne out when Soft AC stations began playing it again in the late ?10s. I?ve also seen ?Green Onions? show surprising radio-research currency on a few occasions over the years (along with other instrumentals kept alive through Guitar Hero and guitar lessons). It’s also interesting that Stax’s last major hit, Shirley Brown’s “Woman to Woman” outlived many of its peers at Adult R&B radio for years. Three years ago, Ross on Radio readers voted for their favorite song featured in my ?Lost Factor? articles on songs that had most notably faded over the years. ?Startin? All Over Again? by Mel & Tim was tied at the top of their rankings and all alone at the top of mine. And although the answer to ?what?s your favorite song of all time? is never the same for very long, there have been numerous times in recent years when the answer has been ?Respect Yourself? by the Staple Singers. Concord Music Group, which now owns the Stax catalog, has been reservicing the music featured in the documentary in recent weeks. You can also hear its three-volume Soulsville U.S.A.: A Celebration of Stax streaming here.* A few other watching/listening tips for Memorial Day weekend: Episode one of Hulu?s Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Storyspotlights WAPP New York and PD John Lassman for their role in breaking ?Runaway? from a station ?Homegrown? album in 1984. The second episode begins with Bon Jovi calling Lassman, now PD of Active WHMH (Rockin? 101) St. Cloud, Minn. (and morning host as ?Johnny Rock?). In the same way that industry veteran Donna Halper has been more actively telling Rush?s radio origin story lately, it?s a reminder of the difference that radio enterprise has made. Stream Rockin? 101 here. WNBC New York is a radio station that has come to intrigue me more in recent years. Most readers know it for its late-era role in the career of Howard Stern (or maybe Don Imus). When WFAN took over its frequency in 1988, then-PD Dale Parsons created a 66 Years of WNBC documentary that was recently made available again on John Leslie?s Talking About Radiopodcast. Leslie is a veteran of the full-service AC/MOR radio era. There?s an equally fascinating episode where Leslie himself is interviewed that?s also worth hearing.* Laser 558 became an ROR reader favorite in March, thanks to its recreations and reconstructed airchecks of the ?80s CHR that targeted the UK from the North Sea in the mid-?80s. This weekend, the station celebrates the 40th birthday of the original station with a May 24 tribute and a new lineup the next day featuring five of the original station?s DJs.* more

From Radio Insight: Audacy flipped Classic Hip Hop “Hot 95.9” K240EL/KKMJ-HD3 Austin to Red Dirt/Classic Country “Austin?s 95.9 Texas Country” at 12pm today. The flip comes ahead of the closing of the sale of Genuine Austin Radio’s similarly formatted 99.3 KOKE-FM/98.5 K253AN to Spanish language operator Norsan Media. The new brand will feature a mix of Classic Country and Texas/Red Dirt artists such as George Strait, Willie Nelson, Waylon & the Boys, Aaron Watson, Cody Johnson, Kacey Musgraves and Cody Jinks. The station intends to add on-air talent in the coming weeks. Audacy Regional President Doug Abernethy commented, “?We?re delighted to launch Austin?s 95.9 Texas Country and continue delivering this wildly popular format to listeners on the FM dial. This station will offer the perfect blend of genre classics and the music shaping the Country music industry today.” The Classic Hip Hop format has a 0.6 share in the April 2024 Nielsen Audio ratings, while KOKE-FM does not subscribe. iHeartMedia’s 98.1 KVET-FM is mostly Classic Country with a few recurrents and currently ranks fourth in the market with a a 5.4 share. Ahead of the flip, K240EL had been stunting as “Made In America Radio” with music abour America such as Dierks Bentley “Home”, Bruce Springsteen “Born In The USA”, Miley Cyrus “Party In The USA”, Elton John “Philadelphia Freedom”, Alabama “Forty Hour Week”, and Martina McBride “Independence Day”. more

From Radio Insight: A format change is expected today at Alpha Media Hot AC “Star 102.3” WXLC Waukegan IL. As we first hinted about in the story about the layoffs at the company’s Joliet IL cluster last week, WXLC will be flipping to Country today simulcasting 98.3 WCCQ Crest Hill/Joliet. It is expected that the stations will be branded as “Chicago’s Free Country“. The combination of the two signals will cover both the northern and southern suburbs of Chicago giving an in-market competitor to Audacy’s “US 99” WUSN for the first time since iHeartMedia flipped “Big 95.5” to Rock in September 2020. The flip will also end 40+ years of Pop music on WXLC dating back to its early 1980’s flip to Top 40. Alpha had rebranded the station as “Star 102.3” last May as it regionalized morning and afternoon shows on its three Chicagoland Hot ACs. more

From Radio Insight: Bryan Broadcasting CHR “Candy 95” KNDE College Station TX has announced the addition of Mikaylee Supak to its morning show alongside Ted Hallowell. The new show will relaunch the “Morning Candy” brand on the station that hasn’t been in use the past few years. Supak originally joined the company last summer working at News/Talk 1620 WTAW while attending Texas A&M University. She recently graduated with a major in Business Administration, and a minor in Journalism. Bryan Broadcasting Operations Manager and KNCE Program Director Rob Mack detailed, “Mikaylee?s radio story is an interesting one. She got the attention of our morning news anchor and WTAW host Chelsea Reber on Instagram, which led to a part-time fill-in role on WTAW last summer. Mikaylee expressed an interest in learning all facets of the radio business, so we had her sit in with Ted on Candy 95. This is all while completing her senior year at A&M. When we re-opened our search for a morning co-host earlier this year, we kept coming back to Mikaylee. She has really grown into this role, and I am proud to have her on our team. With Ted & Mikaylee on ?Morning Candy?, Ryan Star on mid-days, myself on afternoons and Catnip at night, Candy 95 is really firing on all cylinders and creating great, local radio for Aggieland each day!? Mikaylee says, ?A dream I never even thought possible. My dad always told me to do something that makes you want to put two feet on the ground in the morning, and while I maybe wish I didn?t have to put them on the ground so early in the morning, I genuinely love my job. I am so excited to officially be a co-host of Morning Candy on Candy 95! I can?t wait for all that is to come and get even more connected with the community. Hello Aggieland!? more

Evans had been on family leave the past few months to help care for her family after her father passed away in December. Hi. Hi. Hi. I have missed you so much. More than you know. Many of you have reached out with well wishes, thank you, and questions which I will try and answer now. Sadly, in December my beloved Dad, Sam, whose record collection had a lot to do with my career path, passed away. As a member of the sandwich generation, I suddenly found myself torn between my work responsibilities and the growing needs of my family. With the support of the Baltimore Public Media team, I took some time off to spend with my loved ones and assess the necessities required of my new normal. My family?s needs have proven very challenging and even though I do so with a heavy heart I have made the difficult decision to step away from my position at WTMD to prioritize my family. I know many of you face similar challenges and the difficult decisions that go with them. I only hope you are surrounded by a team of friends and colleagues as supporting and loving as this crew. I am indebted to the patience and grace of my WTMD and WYPR family. As you know I am a total music nerd, a fanatic some might say, a proud champion and cheerleader for local artists, and, proudly, a lifelong Marylander. As such, I am just as big a fan of WTMD as you are, and it has been my great honor to serve you and the music community of Baltimore and beyond. I will not say goodbye because as Wilco said, “You never know.” So, it’s take care and rock on! Until we meet again, much love, Carrie. Evans had joined WTMD in 2019 as afternoon host and grabbed the Program Director role in June 2022 after nearly a year as Interim PD. Prior to joining WTMD, she spent fifteen years at AAA 103.1 WRNR-FM Grasonville/Annapolis MD eventually rising to Music Director and midday host. APD/afternoon host Tyler LaPorte will serve as Interim Program Director. more

From Radio Insight: RadioDays North America has announced the addition of Hubbard Radio Executive Vice President of Programming & Audience Development to their ?30 Ideas in 45 Minutes,? the closing session of the June 2-4 conference. The signature panel of Radiodays Europe, 30 Ideas in 45 Minutes features Consultant Nik Goodman with a wrap up of three days of panels with a series of mini-presentations meant to send attendees home with actionable strategies. In the most recent European edition, presenters suggested everything from deliberately timing morning features to end at 9:05 and make listeners late for work (Paul Sylvester, Absolute Radio UK) to trying to bring the audience together more often (Australian consultant Wade Kingsley, inspired by Taylor Swift) to being ?more human, less robot? (Greatest Hits Radio UK?s Des Paul, in response to the AI discussion dominating radio). The full panel from Munich can be seen here. Other highlights of RDNA include Paige Nienaber?s look at ?20 Electrifying No/Low Budget Promotions That Will Grab People?s Attention,? a look at the modernization of Classic Hits, and a discussion between BBC Director of Music Lorna Clarke and Julie Adam, a veteran Canadian PD now Executive VP/GM for Universal Music Canada. The full RDNA panel schedule is available here. more
