From Radio Insight: Carl Russo will retire from afternoons at Cumulus Media Classic Rock “97 Rock” WGRF Buffalo on Friday, April 25. Russo, who has held the afternoon position at the station since its current iteration debuted in September 1988, shared on social media, ?JUST GAVE MY 2 WEEKS NOTICE*..ILL TAKE SOME VACATION TIME AND DO A FINAL GOODBYE SHOW NEXT FRI THE 25TH.? Russo began his career in January 1980 hosting nights at 1400 WYSL Buffalo. That August, he would add a second job hosting weekend overnights on the original “97 Rock” WGRQ. He went full-time at WGR-FM hosting overnights in 1982 and then nights the following year. When the station dropped its Rock format for AC in 1985, Russo would spend time in nights at WFBQ Indianapolis and then KZEW Dallas until “97 Rock” returned in September 1988. From Radio Insight: In December 2020, I interviewed radio/TV veteran Wink Martindale and writer/producer Gary Theroux about their syndicated holiday special, The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time. The following year, the pair teamed up again to create a new two-hour weekly version of Theroux’s History of Rock & Roll, the syndicated special he created in 1978.* Martindale died April 15 at age 91. He had updated Greatest Christmas Hits last December and completed 154 evergreen episodes of*History.*Those will remain in syndication through United Stations in the U.S. and Radio Express worldwide. His interview remains one of my favorites, in part because Martindale does such a good job of summing up his own career. Here’s Wink Martindale in his own words as profiled in late 2020. Wink Martindale has been in radio since the early days of rock ?n? roll. In 1954, when Dewey Phillips premiered ?That?s All Right (Mama),? Martindale was the WHBQ Memphis jock who called Gladys Presley, trying to get Elvis to come to the station for an interview. By then, Martindale had been in radio for 3-1/2 years, meaning that his career dates to the early days of music radio altogether. Gary Theroux has been programming Christmas music since long before it was ubiquitous on the radio. He spent 20 years with Readers Digest, which included compiling their successful Christmas Through The Years box set. He was also the writer/co-producer, with legendary programmer/consultant/syndicator Bill Drake, of 1978?s History of Rock & Roll, one of radio?s first major long-form syndicated specials. In 2012, the pair teamed up for The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time, a 10-hour countdown. Theroux and Martindale begin revising the annual show in August, typically wrapping in October. Some affiliates begin airing it as soon as November. In 2021, History was* ?reimagined as an all-new two-hour weekly series? hosted by the then 87-year-old Martindale. At a time when Christmas music is no longer scarce on the radio, 100 Greatest Christmas Hits is set apart by its breadth and depth of holiday music, a reflection of Theroux?s decades in the compilation business. Listeners hear ?Happy Xmas (War Is Over),? ?Holly Jolly Christmas,? and ?Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.? But there?s a wide variety of ?chart extras?–secret weapons from every era of holiday music, particularly some of the Oldies and MOR-era titles no longer heard on AC?s all-Christmas formats, as well as songs from Country and R&B that aren?t typically on the safe list. The 2019 countdown included Christmas music from everybody from Tom Lehrer to the Temptations; from Ariana Grande to C.W. McCall. Brenda Lee was represented with ?Rockin? Around the Christmas Tree,? but also with ?I?m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus.? The show played the live version of Presley?s ?Blue Christmas,? from his 1968 comeback TV special, but also ?Santa Claus Is Back in Town.? 100 Greatest Christmas Hits is augmented by audio from more than 175 acts, part of Theroux?s library of more than 3,000 interviews. Even as holiday music becomes a ratings juggernaut, Theroux says many PDs ?run generic music anyone can tune out of at any time without feeling they?re missing something.? Artist interviews have been a major part of Martindale?s radio career, as well. When he joined MOR powerhouse KMPC Los Angeles in the early ?70s, Martindale?s GM asked ??what would you do with three hours?? I didn?t prep when I was a rock jock. But I thought, if I want to keep this job, I?d better give serious thought to prep every day.? The result was that artist interviews were built into ?audio biographies? in a quest to ?make people care about who was going to be on the show next.? Most fans of Christmas music have a song whose first annual hearing makes the holiday season official for them. Martindale?s favorite is the Carpenters? ?Merry Christmas Darling.? Both Martindale and Theroux interviewed the Carpenters: Martindale in the early ?70s during the early rush of the duo?s success; Theroux spoke to Karen Carpenter in 1978 to promote their first Christmas album, Christmas Portrait and remembers her ?incredible warmth and humanity.? Working at KMPC, Martindale also had ample opportunities to talk to owner Gene Autry who recorded ?Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer? only at his wife?s urging after Bing Crosby had turned it down. ?He loved talking about his recording career?as big as his movie career was, he loved to make records, he loved to sing, and he loved hearing his songs on the radio. Even if he was in the back seat of his limo, he would tell the driver to turn it up.* ?He was a great guy. I grew up going to those Saturday afternoon westerns at the Malco Theater in Jackson, Tenn., and admiring the guy with the white hat. When they asked me to come in to sign my contract, I was sitting in GM Stan Spero?s office and in comes the cowboy. It was almost like an out-of-body experience,? Martindale says. ?He loved radio. I was so impressed that if he was in town, he would come in for several hours a day.? (Autry would also hot-line jocks for breaks he liked or didn?t.)* Is there a Christmas song that Martindale is sick of? ?If we played only what we like, I?d play ‘Silent Night,’ ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ and ‘Silver Bells’ over and over. Even though I don?t personally care for ‘Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer,’ I know people get a smile or a laugh after it. And some people are hearing it for the first time.? In 2020, as the world contended with its COVID-19 Christmas, Theroux said the tone of the show wasn’t changing. ?We don?t make any reference directly to that because it?s not a cheery thought. We stick to the idea of generating that warm, romantic, and fun Christmas feeling all the way through.? ?We can all agree that we can?t wait for 2020 to be over, because of the kind of year its been,? added Martindale. ?This is a release. This is a chance to put 2020 aside and enjoy some of the feelings that that people have enjoyed since their youth.” Martindale was able to have a multi-media career?TV game show host, recording artist with a top 10 hit–at a time when those were particularly rare for DJs. ?Radio led me into TV. I enjoyed a career like few people enjoyed. If I was starting today, it would be tough. It?s tough for young people who want to be in radio,? he says. ?I listen to SiriusXM and they play music back-to-back with no personality. But I heard Neil Sedaka do a show and it was interesting. Pat Boone does an hour and it?s very interesting. But for the most part, I don?t know where radio?s going to go from here.? That said, Martindale does hear local radio that he likes in the Palm Springs, Calif., market including Classic Hits KDGL (106.9 The Eagle) and Adult Standards Mod 107.3. “I enjoy the personality factor. It?s fun to hear what they have to say about the singers and the stories behind the songs. ?I got in to radio in 1951 at the tail-end of the big band era. I went through the birth of rock and roll, then Beatlemania. I lived through a lot of eras in music. I?m so glad that I chose radio and later TV as my life?s work,? Martindale says. Besides being grateful for his success, ?It?s been entertaining for me and I hope entertaining for the people who watched or listened.? more

From Radio Insight: Nielsen has reissued a pair of recent ratings releases. The February 2025 monthly for Allentown/Bethlehem PA was reissued this afternoon after inadvertently omitting Major Keystone Hip Hop “Loud Radio 106.9/99.5” WHOL/WEST, which is added with a 0.9 share. The Fall 2024 ratings for Waco TX were reissued due to “ambiguous processing instructions” from M&M Broadcasters following format changes last July. Nielsen said that it “processed the changes in a manner that misallocated the stations? trends.” The revisions see Classic Country “104.9 Shooter-FM” KRMX, which has moved from 92.9, rise from a 2.0 share to a 3.0. Classic Country “Kicker 99.3” 1590 KBHT, which previously also simulcasted on 104.9 maintains a 1.5 share. First Dallas Media’s 92.9 KZBI, which it had acquired and flipped to a simulcast of its Christian AC 90.9 KCBI-FM Dallas, drops from a 2.5 share to a 0.5. No other stations in either market were affected. more

From Radio Insight: The 2025 NAB Show in Las Vegas was a contradiction wrapped in a conundrum. While attendance was down for the third straight year to just 55,000, a year-to-year drop of 9.8%, and way down from over 100,000 a decade ago. Most speculation on the drop came from President Trump’s tariff war likely keeping many international attendees away as many as attendance from Asia was noticeably down, while the annual “Great Canadian Suite” party was cancelled due to many questions regarding the trade war with Canada. Those that did attend were there with clear goals. Most vendors I spoke to said their booths were busier than recent years as most attendees were there with purposes and did seem to have money to spend on projects. In terms of products launches, this year seemed to be a transition year with vendors focusing on enhancing or adding-on to existing products rather than debuting new product lines. Radio World released its annual list of new “Best of Show” products here. Goals of many shoppers on the floor focused on finding more productive ways to distribute programming and simplifying workflows. Engineers from at least three companies I spoke to were seeking ways to build their own internal shared audio network along the lines of iHeartMedia’s “Format Center” or Townsquare Media’s “TLA” to share music logs and talent across their portfolios. Smaller operators appeared focused on redundancies and operational cost savings, such as enhanced transmitters or cloud based automation. Northeast Radio Watch’s Scott Fybush noted, “Pretty much every audio, console and networking company on the floor in West Hall (and a few in North) was showing a version of their product that operates at least partially in the cloud. If you?re looking to put a radio station on the air without a physical studio plant, or at least to be able to operate partially remotely, this is your golden age.” Fybush also noted that some of the console manufacturers are following in the footsteps of the shakeup created by the introduction of RODE’s RODEcaster Pro a few years ago and the move to virtualized studios. Every major console manufacturer had some form of software based solution running on a touchscreen, while Telos Alliance’s Axia had one that mixed tactile and virtual. Wheatstone’s AudioArts came closer to RODE with a full analog console retailing for just over $2000. Moving away from the show floor, panels focused on radio as well seemed better attended this year with many at standing room only. Unfortunately, two of the most important were not. Hofstra University’s Andy Gladding emceed a session on how he created an young engineering pipeline to commercial broadcasters by just being accessible to his students. At the Public Radio Engineering Conference that preceded NAB, Inrush’s Rob Bertrand outlined the future of collaboration between public stations needed by discussing how by outsourcing back-office services such as engineering or traffic to third parties they can get better services. Bertrand explained that they would get larger teams available to them for less money and preserve many jobs through the staffers joining the third parties. In general though, the vibe at the show was one of uncertainty. From the questions about Trump’s tariffs that many said were already affecting some important revenue channels such as local automotive advertising to the FCC’s “Delete Delete Delete” proceeding that could alter nearly every facet of the broadcasting industry as we know it, nobody knew what tomorrow would bring let alone where we’d be a year from now. And that is a conundrum that will take some time to figure out. more
