From Radio Insight: The merger and acquisition rumor mill went into overdrive this afternoon with a pair of possible group sales. First Bloomberg reported that Apollo Global Management has hired asset manager Moelis & Co. to explore a sale of Cox Media Group. Bloomberg estimates that a sale including Cox’s television and radio stations could net $4 billion with people familiar with the matter saying there is a “preference to sell the holdings to a buyer that can take on most of the company rather than carving up the channels among a larger group of parties.” It added, “There’s no certainty the deliberations will result in a transaction.” It has been an open secret for some time that Apollo never wanted the radio holdings when it first planned to acquire Cox’s television holdings along with its newspaper and radio stations in Dayton OH for $3.1 billion in February 2019 as well as the licenses of Northwest Television. Four months later after being unable to find a buyer for the radio division, Apollo acquired Cox’s 57 radio stations and CoxReps, Gaumt, and Cox?s Washington, D.C. news bureau operations for $500 million. After selling its four stations in Houston to Radio One in April 2023 for $27.5 million, Cox Media Group continues to operate station clusters in Athens GA, Atlanta, Dayton, Jacksonville, Long Island, Orlando, San Antonio, Tampa, and Tulsa Over the past week, I have also received a number of inquiries from sources questioning the validity of gossip that Alpha Media is about to be acquired. These inquiries from various unrelated segments of the business all named Connoisseur Media as the expected buyer. The Jeffrey Warshaw led Connoisseur currently operates eleven stations in Connecticut and Long Island following last summer’s sale of its two stations in Frederick MD. The company significantly downsized in 2018 and 2019 through a number of sales and swaps as it departed markets including Allentown PA, Billings MT, Erie PA, Hartford CT, Stroudsburg PA, and Trenton NJ. Some of our sources note that the primary investors in post-Chapter 11 bankruptcy Alpha Media have been seeking to exit their investment for quite some time. One of the sources noted that an announcement could come as soon as next week. Warshaw led a group in April 2022 that attempted to acquire Cumulus Media for $1.2 billion that would have taken the company private for between $15 and $17 per share, but was quickly dismissed with CEO Mary Berner stating that the Cumulus Board of Directors unanimously concluded that the indication of interest significantly undervalued the company. Cumulus stock closed today at 45 cents per share. more

Archer?s KMVQ has been one of the most successful and admired CHRs, typically outperforming the format during its travails of recent years, and continuing to lead on music, rather than merely following streaming metrics. He joins the panel ?How to Do Top 40 in 2025.? Consultant Nik Goodman will lead a discussion between Archer and Sarah Cummings, content director of Bell Media, which includes CKFM (Virgin Radio) Toronto and its similarly branded sister stations throughout Canada. Warren Kurtzman, and also featuring Troy McCallum of PD Classic Hits CHBM (Boom 97.3) Toronto and Jay Stone, station manager/PD of CKNO (102.3 Now) Edmonton, the station at the heart of the ?join the conversation? personality-driven version of Hot AC. Johnson is president of local programming for Townsquare Media. That group?s success in attracting digital revenue will be the focus of ?From Digital Dimes to Digital Riches,? moderated by Andrew Johnson, PD of AC CHYM/CIKZ (106.7 Country) Kitchener, Ontario. Radiodays is being presented in conjunction with the Departure Festival + Conference ? an expanded version of Canadian Music Week that adds comedy, art, and technology to the festival?s focus. RDNA attendees will also have access to departure sessions including Bryan Adams, Tegan and Sara, City and Colour’s Dallas Green, Shaggy, and Matty Matheson, the Canadian chef/restauranteur/actor who is executive producer of*The Bear. In other new RDNA panel highlights, ?It?s Not You, It?s Me: Radio and the Music Industry in 2025 and Beyond? asks what the radio/record relationship should look like now, in a time when the industry sees radio?s role as ?the finisher,? rather than the gatekeeper. Coleman?s Sam Milkman moderates industry veteran Abbey Konowitch, and other panelists TBA. Also, Cumulus/Westwood One?s Pierre Bouvard will be among those seeking to answer ?Audience Measurement for Radio: What?s the Fix?? Radiodays North America has just announced a special rate for Ross on Radio readers who can save 25% off conference passes by using promo code ROR25.The author will be one of six presenters at Radiodays? ?30 Ideas in 45 Minutes,? joining Goodman, podcast consultant Arielle Nissenblatt, and others to be announced for the signature closing session. Among Radiodays North America sessions already announced in ROR: Tiny Desk Concerts: an NPR Phenomena*?*It?s the reason younger listeners (and commercial-radio programmers) are finding NPR. Host/producer Bobby Carter shares how the concerts became a powerhouse for music discovery and got 40 million views a month. The Fred Show*? The Chicago-based morning show just added new affiliates in Norfolk, Salt Lake City, and West Palm Beach. Host Fred, teammate Hampton, and WKSC PD Howard sit down with consultant Nik Goodman to discuss the inner workings of the much-admired morning show. The LA Fires: Anatomy of a Natural Disaster*? From Radio Insight: Audacy Sports “670 The Score” WSCR Chicago has cut ties with midday host Dan Bernstein after nearly 30 years at the station following Bernstein’s social media tirade against a commenter that led to him threatening to dox the other user for questioning whether Bernstein killed the fish he caught while on vacation. Bernstein had been suspended from the 10am-2pm show he had been hosting with Marshall Harris all week. At the end of the show on Friday, Vice President/Brand Manager Mitch Rosen read a statement on air commenting, “?On behalf of Kevin Cassidy and myself, we want to let all of you know that Dan Bernstein no longer works at the Score. We thank Dan for his time here and wish him nothing but the best. Please reach out to me if you have any questions. Thank you.? The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Bernstein has already been fired from the board of Camp One Step over the posts. Bernstein had been with WSCR since 1995 starting as an anchor and reporter. From 1999 through 2016 he was teamed with Sun-Times columnist Terry Boers where the duo eventually settled into the afternoon drive timeslot for over a decade. He has hosted late mornings and middays with a number of co-hosts and solo since 2018. more

From Radio Insight: After announcing last month it would cancel its Saturday night Adult Standards program ?New Standards? hosted by Paul Cavalconte, which also had a dedicated stream with a second Sunday afternoon show, New York Public Radio has announced it will transfer the show to Newark Public Radio Jazz 88.3 WBGO Newark NJ. Cavalconte will host his final show on Public News/Talk 93.9 WNYC-FM New York on Saturday, March 22 from 8-11pm before relaunching it on WBGO in late April. The show features a mix of Standards from the past century starting with the “great age of the mid-century American Songbook, its evolution into the singer-songwriter era, and the present day performers reimagining this tradition for contemporary audiences.” Artists featured vary from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Stephen Sondheim to modern artists such as Jon Batiste, Leslie Odom Jr, Samara Joy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Cavalconte will continue to host weekends on New York Public Radio Classical 105.9 WQXR Newark and “Cavalcade” on AAA 90.7 WFUV New York. He has previously been heard on Smooth Jazz “CD 101.9” WQCD, 1130 WNEW, 92.7 WLIR, 104.3 WNCN, 104.3 WAXQ, 710 WOR, and Sirius. He commented, ?In the Songbook classic ?Where or When,? Lorenz Hart wrote, ?some things that happen for the first time, seem to be happening again,?. I am deeply grateful for the ongoing support from WNYC, my new champions at WBGO, and for the career serendipity that has allowed me to find such a unique niche in New York radio, bringing my music passions to the public stations with the most dedicated audiences.” New York Public Radio President/CEO LaFontaine E. Oliver commented, “?I couldn?t be more thrilled that New Standards will continue to delight listeners in the NYC and NJ region from a new perch right across the Hudson. For close to a decade, Paul has been a trusted guide to this cherished American artform, and I?m grateful to our public radio colleagues at WBGO for working with us to find a way to keep music going. I know the show and its ardent listener base are in good hands. Partnerships and deals like this move at the speed of trust. Thanks to the years of collaboration between WNYC/WQXR and WBGO, and our shared values and commitment to service, the New Standards deal came together very quickly. That?s a win for music fans across the region, and a great example of the public media ecosystem functioning at its best. We look forward to having more opportunities to amplify each other’s work through the Tri-State Public Music Collaboration in the coming months.? WBGO President/CEO Steven A. Williams added, “New Standards will be a uniquely compatible addition to BGO?s broadcast and online programming schedule. I have a deep and abiding admiration for Paul?s singular professionalism and unrivaled musical aptitude. And when we were presented with this opportunity, there was only one response, and it took me about a nano-second to make it.? more

From Radio Insight: While rumors spreading on Thursday of the entire on-air staff being dismissed from the Milwaukee Radio Alliance have been proven untrue, at least one significant cut did take place as morning host Jonathan Adler exits Alternative “FM 102.1” WLUM Milwaukee after nineteen years in the daypart. Adler joined the station in March 2006 as part of the station’s transition from Rock leaning “New Rock 102.1” back to Alternative co-hosting mornings with Brian Kramp. Following Kramp’s exit in 2013, he would continue in mornings solo. He wrote, “March madness indeed! Sadly, due to budget cuts (and not performance) today was my last day doing the morning show at FM 102/1. For 19 years*and 4 days, I’ve had nothing but fun and can’t emphasize that enough. This is due to incredible listeners and specifically an incredible group of people at the Milwaukee Radio Alliance. Also, the talent of Michelle Rutkowski, John Schroeder & Ryan Miller who have also been at @fm1021 for 19 years! I genuinely look forward to what is next.” Adler can be reached at jadler414@gmail.com. more

From Radio Insight: The percentage of Americans who have consumed a podcast has reached an all-time high, according to The Infinite Dial? 2025, released by Edison Research with support from Audacy, Cumulus Media, and SiriusXM Media. This latest installment is part of the longest-running annual survey of digital media consumption in the United States. Now in its 27th year, The Infinite Dial is widely recognized as a trusted industry benchmark for media consumption habits. Presented by Megan Lazovick, Edison Research Vice President, alongside James Cridland, Editor of Podnews, the study highlights critical insights into podcast consumption, online audio trends, in-car audio usage, smart speaker usage, social media behaviors, and other digital media habits. Key Findings from The Infinite Dial 2025: Podcast Consumption Reaches an All-Time High 70% of Americans age 12+ have listened to a podcast. 51% of those Americans age 12+ have watched a podcast. 73% of Americans age 12+ have consumed a podcast in either audio or video format, representing an estimated 210 million people. Podcasting achieves new heights with 55% of Americans age 12+ now being monthly consumers. Video Integration is Expanding Podcast Reach 48% of Americans age 12+ have both listened to and watched a podcast. According to Edison Podcast Metrics, YouTube is the service used most often to listen to podcasts with 33% of U.S. weekly podcast listeners using the service. A strong male video podcast audience drives higher monthly podcast consumption among men (57%) compared to women (52%). Lazovick says, “The reality is that the overwhelming majority of people who watch podcasts will say that they are podcast listeners. But as more people discover the platform via video, it’s smart to think about it as consumption instead of just listening. That is not intended at all to undercut the magic of audio-only content. There’s room for both video and audio in the world of podcasts.” Public Opinion Supports Social Media Regulation Social media reaches 86% of Americans, an estimated 248 million Americans. Nearly half (48%) of Americans express support for banning social media access for anyone under the age of 16. Online Audio Reaches All-Time High* 79% of Americans age 12+ listen to online audio monthly, an estimated 228 million people. Among Americans aged 55+, listening preferences for the online audio brands they use most often are more evenly distributed across multiple brands. Car Audio Continues Its Digital Shift Among Americans age 18+ who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month (88%), 40% have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and 33% actively use one of these systems. Among Americans age 18+ who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month (88%), 28% have Apple CarPlay, with 22% actively using it. Among Americans age 18+ who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month (88%), 19% have Android Auto, with 13% actively using it. “As someone who has been using Infinite Dial since I was working at the original Virgin Radio in London, I’ve watched digital audio evolve from a niche to mainstream,? says Cridland. ?These numbers don’t just inform strategy ? they validate the direction our industry has been moving.” Other findings include: Smart TVs are now in three-quarters of Americans? homes. X usage has slightly increased among Americans age 18+, with the rise primarily driven by Republicans at 25%. Usage among Democrats is up by one percentage point to 22%, while it remains steady at 21% among Independents. Among the 31% of monthly TikTok users, 39% say they would use Instagram more often if TikTok were banned. Click here to download The Infinite Dial 2025 Loading... Taking too long? From Radio Insight: Wheatstone will unveil at NAB 2025 its Neuron FM/HD/DAB+ spectral audio processor for bringing more energy to the FM band. With more choices in audio delivery and listening devices today, Neuron?s spectral approach to audio processing is designed to bring new life to radio ? along with listeners. Neuron FM/HD/DAB+ spectral audio processor uses patented 1/3 octave band resolution for precision transient peak control without pulling down critical frequencies with it. The result is the ability to drive more energy into the processor, yet maintain peak compliance for a much fuller, vibrant on-air sound. The new spectral audio processor uses proprietary Density Compensation? algorithms for real-time analysis of the pre- and post-processed audio as well as data from the user?s control settings to invisibly manage spectral balance and program density across the range of program content today. Also included in the Neuron FM/HD/DAB+ audio processor: pre-emphasis optimization, multipath mitigation, and RDS/RBDS generator, SCA and stereo generator, plus Wheatstone? baseband192 for digitizing the multiplex spectrum. Neuron is WheatNet IP compatible and has smart settings for exponentially enhancing control settings to create a signature sound in minutes, not days or hours. . Wheatstone will show the Neuron FM/HD/DAB+ spectral audio processor at booth W1654 during NAB 2025. more
