From Radio Insight: In the early ’80s time of the ?disco backlash,? legendary Top 40 AM WLS Chicago became, essentially, an Album Rock station, at least in the evening hours when I could hear it. During that time, two things kept it tethered to CHR. One was the jocks. The other was the WLS jingle, even if it was being segued into ?Crazy Train? by Ozzy Osbourne.* WLS?s jingle was already one of radio?s most recognizable, rivaled only perhaps by KHJ Los Angeles and WABC New York. Those AMs left Top 40 a few years ahead of their Chicago counterpart, but the WLS signature took on new life, thanks to the success of KIIS Los Angeles. When WLS itself was finally challenged in 1982, it was by a new CHR with even more jingles, ?Hot Hits? WBBM-FM (B96). The WLS jingle was still part of the News/Talk AM that WLS became. Earlier this year, it made a quiet return to its Cumulus sister Classic Hits FM under new PD Todd Cavanah. This week, TM Studios officially unveiled the ?WLS Classic Hits? package. Three days in, Chief Creative Officer Dave Bethell says he is receiving TM?s biggest response to any project, a reflection of the goodwill surrounding both the station and the iconic jingle. We took a Fresh Listen. When we first heard jingles back on WLS-FM, in mid-January, they were being phased in with one cut an hour. Now they?re at two an hour, both used for song-to-song transitions, and Bethell says that the signature top-of-hour jingle is likely next.* Other than those stations co-owned by Audacy, WLS-FM was the major-market Classic Hits station most reminiscent of KRTH (K-Earth 101) Los Angeles. Under Cavanah, power rotations are still similar (31x a week vs. KRTH?s 34), but the feel of the imaging is different, cleaner than KRTH?s more frenetic listener drops. (Another difference: There?s not the same push into the late ?90s/2000s as in K-Earth?s ongoing evolution.) Even without a direct competitor, Chicago is a crowded place for Classic Hits, thanks to Classic Rock WDRV (The Drive), Soft AC WLIT (Lite FM), ?60s/?70s-based WRME (Me-TV-FM), heritage Triple-A WXRT, and three stations playing some form of CHR throwbacks covering the ?90s forward. Despite this, Mediabase shows WLS-FM with about 50 exclusive titles, including ?Stayin? Alive,? ?Danger Zone,? ?Never Gonna Give You Up,? “My Sharona,” and ?You Make Loving Fun.? While ?80s pop/rock is the center of most large-market Classic Hits stations these days, it?s especially resonant in this hour of WLS. ?No One Like You? by the Scorpions is a regular part of Classic Hits now, but it entered the format canon retroactively in most places. WLS was one of the few Top 40s to play it as a current. Middayer Erin Carman is heard here giving away Sammy Hagar tickets. WLS was his most prominent Top 40 supporter in the days before Van Hagar as well. Here?s WLS-FM at 10 a.m., March 11: Bon Jovi, ?Livin? on a Prayer? ? Preceded by the legal ID as the sweep starter. Two local town mentions. Also, ?No. 1 for the ?80s and Classic Hits.? Bananarama, ?Cruel Summer? ? Opening break from middayer Erin Carman. Elton John, ?Rocket Man? ? App promo ?so you can stream Dave & Kim on the go.? OMD, ?If You Leave? ? the first of two jingles this hour, ?Theme 5/Slogan? with the ??80s/Classic Hits? slugline. Fleetwood Mac, ?Go Your Own Way? ? The Oscars were the night before. Carman jokes ?last night was the first and last time I wasn?t distracted by John Cena?s horribly fake hair.? Eric Carmen, ?Hungry Eyes? ? Sweeper with the calls/slugline. Carmen?s death would become public later that day. Followed by a Dave & Kim morning show promo (?$300 is up for grabs tomorrow morning? in Show Biz Quiz) into the stopset. Bryan Adams, ?Summer of ?69? ? App promo, ?Make sure you stream us wherever you are,? brings us back to music. Scorpions, ?No One Like You? ? The percussive ?Theme 6/ID,? which begins with the instrumental sig, then the calls, is the transition here.* Michael Jackson, ?Billie Jean? ? ?It?s Erin Go Bragh!? Carman says. ?Countdown to the greatest day ever, St. Paddy?s Day on Sunday, and you could get lucky tomorrow. Every hour between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., it?s ?Two Ticket Tuesday?? with tickets to Sammy Hagar and Loverboy. Goo Goo Dolls, ?Iris? ? Sweeper: ?Stream us on your phone, smart speaker, and desktop.? Survivor, ?Eye of the Tiger? ? Cold segue.* Daryl Hall & John Oates, ?Maneater? ? Carman jokes about ?another story from the ?I make bad decisions? file? ? specifically about scheduling a kids? sleepover for ?Spring Forward? Saturday night/Sunday morning. Followed by a Dave & Kim promo into the stopset. TM?s publicity for the new package asks programmers to ?set aside their personal biases against jingles.? At Classic Hits, the issues for jingles have gone even deeper. Classic Rock has successfully continued to play the early ?70s and even some ?60s while still attracting new listeners, But Classic Hits remains self-conscious about not sounding retro, and that likely influences attitudes toward jingles as well. At this moment when classic hits have such all-ages currency, perhaps there?s nothing to prove anymore. While several Classic Hits outlets, including K-Earth, have long-running call letters, WLS-FM is one of only two stations in the top 20 markets with calls that reach back to its CHR era. (The other is Q105 Tampa.) In that era, the WLS jingle was so powerful that listeners were asked to ?sing it and win.? Now, the new jingles add vibrancy and variety to WLS-FM, keeping it from, among other things, overtaxing the station?s imaging in an era of only four jock breaks per hour. Here?s hoping that WLS can ?sing it and win? again. The sway that WLS continues to hold over radio people today is evident from the number of tribute projects. Here’s a look at three current or forthcoming efforts, including a jingle history page, an online station, and further recreations of WLS audio. more

From Radio Insight: Local media leads truth and accuracy in Washington state in a recent statewide media study, conducted by SmithGeiger for the Washington State Association of Broadcasters (WSAB). Based in Los Angeles, SmithGeiger’s research for WSAB underscores the enduring relevance of local radio and television broadcasters across the state, despite the rise of on-demand content. Keith Shipman, President & CEO of the WSAB, expressed satisfaction with the findings. “It’s gratifying to see the majority of our state’s citizens recognize local television and AM/FM radio as leading the media landscape in truthfulness and accuracy. With local TV securing the top spot for trust and accuracy at 62%, and AM/FM radio following closely at 57%, it underscores their pivotal role in our information ecosystem. Additionally, local newspapers are highly regarded among all media sources, further emphasizing the value of local journalism.? Key Insights from the First-Ever WSAB Statewide Media Landscape Study: Local radio (AM/FM) continues to lead as Washington state’s preferred audio platform, with daily usage surpassing 5 hours across various devices?including in-car, digital, mobile, and social platforms marking a +34% increase over paid audio. The widespread availability of radio content on diverse platforms has greatly improved access, leading to increased engagement with local AM/FM stations. Notably, 77% tune into terrestrial radio, with 63% listening in their cars; 52% stream AM/FM radio, while 27% access it via their smartphones. Local television holds the top spot as Washington state’s preferred video platform, with an average daily viewership of nearly 4.5 hours across linear, digital, and social channels?outpacing paid video platforms by +40%. Local television and radio advertisements play crucial roles in introducing new products and services, capturing 48% and 33% of consumers respectively. This highlights the significant impact of both platforms, with television ads slightly leading and radio, especially talent-endorsed spots, closely following as key discovery sources. Support for local journalists, who report on community news, is deemed important by more than half (52%), highlighting the substantial impact of local radio and television stations on consumer sentiment. Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu rank as the leading subscription-based video services in our state, with significant cross-subscription among these platforms. Meanwhile, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram emerge as the top social media channels, with YouTube engaging 8 in 10 consumers weekly in Washington state. More than 8 in 10 (84%) are registered to vote, and nearly 6 in 10 (59%) routinely seek out political news and information each week. Adults 55 and older primarily depend on national TV news (56%) and local TV (39%) for political insights, whereas those aged 18-34 lean towards social media channels not associated with local TV or radio for such information. ?The Washington Media Landscape Study will give a competitive edge to broadcasters across the state,” said Andrew Finlayson, EVP of Media Strategies for SmithGeiger. ?We talked to your audiences, and they told us many important stories your local advertisers will be interested in learning more about. This research will help with setting up the important calls that can lead to a successful partnership with new businesses and deepen the relationship with existing clients.? SmithGeiger stands as a recognized leader in analyzing local and national media audiences, having collaborated with nearly every major broadcast group and network in the United States. Their expertise spans across radio, TV, streaming, digital, and social media, focusing on audience growth and engagement strategies. WSAB initiated this research to offer crucial insights to its members and community leaders, demonstrating the vital and lasting impact local broadcasters have in connecting with and informing their communities. WSFN’s violations included discontinued operation from 9/1/2022 and 1/1/2023 and at various times in 2023, but didn’t file a Silent STA until October 31, 2022 and never did in 2023. The station also continued to broadcast from facilities specified in an engineering STA after it expired and would not file for a new STA until a few months later. Additionally, the commission finds that there was an unauthorized transfer of control to Shanks Broadcasting on September 1, 2022 when WSFN, 1400 WSEG Savannah and 1350 WFNS Blackshear began simulcasting Shanks’ “Sports Superstations” network based at 1150 WXKO Fort Valley/Macon. Southern Media Interactive did not comply with the FCC’s two letters of inquiry as it failed to provide information including the agreements with Shanks, station logs, EAS logs, and utility bills to show compliance with FCC rules. The FCC notes that the translator had been operating from an unauthorized location for more than a year deeming its license cancelled. W279BC’s tower was dismantled on January 4, 2023 with an FCC field agent noting in April that the translator was operating from a tower 3 miles north without any authorization. As the translator had not operated from its licensed site in over 365 days its license was considered expired on January 4, 2024. The FCC has restored fourteen allocations to the FM Table of Allotments following previous license cancellations and unbuilt CPs. The allocations will be added to a future FM auction: 97.1A North English IA 101.3A Colfax LA 102.3A Calhoun City MS 98.5C2 Battle Mountain NV 102.7C0 Independence OR 106.7C1 Huntington OR 103.9C3 Monument OR 100.9A Murdo SD 105.5A Selmer TN 98.1C3 Camp Wood TX 105.7A Cotulla TX 98.5C2 Los Ybanez TX 102.9A Ozona TX 94.5A Stamford TX Pirate ActionsA Notice of Illegal Pirate Broadcasting has been issued to George Miller of Cedar Hill TX for operating on 88.9. The FCC has cancelled the licenses of High Plains Radio Networks’ 980 KICA Clovis NM and 98.3 KICA-FM Farwell TX. Both stations went silent at the end of 2022 after losing their tower site lease. Maranatha Church of Laredo has surrendered the license of 90.5 KMPI McCoy TX. After being silent since May 2023, Cumulus Media has surrendered 1190 KNEK Washington LA. From Radio Insight: As Audacy continues to prepare for its exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the company has filed the plan with the FCC. Two parties will hold attributable stakes in the new Audacy. Laurel Tree Opportunities Corporation will hold at 57% controlling stake in the company. Led by trustees Leonard Benardo, Maryann Canfield, Alexander Soros, and Michael Vachon, the company is financed by the George Soros founded Fund for Policy Reform. Five Hour Energy founder Manoj Bhargava, who recently attempted a hostile takeover of Cumulus Media, will hold 9.5% through his MBX Commercial Finance LLC. Audacy is also seeking a temporary waiver to exceed the permitted limit on foreign investment stating that the aggregate foreign ownership of the entities with the right to obtain New Common Stock in Reorganized Audacy at emergence would exceed the 25 percent limit. To ensure the aggregate foreign ownership will not exceed the 25% limit, company will insert an Equity Allocation Mechanism to convert some of their holdings to Class B Common Stock and/or Special Warrants that will cap foreign ownership on an equity or voting basis at 22.5% at most. Due to changes in the market, Audacy will need to divest one station in Greenville/Spartanburg SC. AC “Magic 106.3” WSPA-FM Simpsonville SC will be placed in a divestiture trust led by station brokerage Kalil & Co.’s Kalil Holding Group LLC. Audacy also is seeking a waiver to continue to hold nine licenses (4 AM and 5 FM) in Kansas City MO due to 1660 KWOD Kansas City being the expanded band descendent of 1250 KYYS. Also of note as Fund For Policy Reform also holds indirect ownership interest in Lakestar Finance, whose debt interest in Latino Media Network exceeds 33 percent of their total asset value, LMN’s stations will count towards Audacy’s attributable ownership limits in a market. Latino Media Network completed the transfer of 99.1 KFZO Denton/Dallas TX and 1140 WQBA Miami FL to a new holding company, Latino Media Holding II LLC earlier this week. Lakestar holds no interest in the new holding company. more

From Radio Insight: In the U.S., Laser 558 was a station profiled once in Radio & Records. In the UK, it was a big story in commercial radio, an offshore AM station in pirate radio tradition that was tighter and more Americanized than the more full-service presentations of BBC Radio 1 and commercial broadcasters. Laser launched in 1984; by the time a second incarnation went away in 1987, its competitors are said to have modernized considerably.* Laser?s closet North American counterpart was XETRA (The Mighty 690), the 1980-84 Mexican-owned AM that targeted both San Diego and Los Angeles until FM Top 40 was firmly reestablished in both markets. Eventually, it was FM sister 91X that endured.* In 1984, I got to hear Laser 558 just once; specifically, the airchecks that were supplied to write its R&R profile. But last year, UK radio veteran Steve Bannister revived Laser 558, first as an online station, and now as a DAB broadcaster in four markets, with three more on the way.* Using the same technology that helped reanimate Chicago?s legendary AM stations last year, Bannister is offering three online channels: one for unedited airchecks, one that uses editing to adjust the content slightly, and one offering the same feed but with AM-radio processing. (The editing is so that the station, which went through a second frequency and slightly different name, ?Laser Hot Hits,? can be consistent throughout the four-year period covered.) Hearing Laser 558 isn?t quite the same as listening to airchecks of American CHR from that era. Besides being the UK?s mix of music ? always deeper in both new wave and dance/R&B ? there?s also a deeper gold component than most American CHRs had in the ?hot hits? era. (There was apparently a ?60s Sunday, which explains a few of the surprising segues below.)* But Laser is still a great listen. The UK mix was often superior. It allowed Top 40 there to avoid our early- ?80s doldrums. A lot of the music heard mostly on the burgeoning dance format outlets, such as KPWR (Power 106) Los Angeles, was mainstream there, and it buoys Top 40 in 1986-87 at a time when the excitement was wearing off here. Hearing American airchecks would give you more depth than our tighter-than-ever Classic Hits format anyway, but hearing a different country?s hits (and stiffs) bakes that in.* In the early ?80s, when UK stations still had considerable spoken-word requirements, Laser was (like the Mighty 690) considered very tight and music-intensive. Now, of course, like the ?80s aircheck of overnights that prompted a previous story, it sounds entirely foreground compared to today?s radio. Bannister is still looking to acquire more airchecks of the station and hear from surviving staffers; he can be reached here. Here are a few stretches of Laser 558, including this one from the first day, May 27, 1984: Fun Boy Three, ?Our Lips Are Sealed? OMD, ?Locomotion? Jonathan King, ?Everyone?s Gone to the Moon? New Order, ?Thieves Like Us? Sly & the Family Stone, ?Stand? After the Fire, ?Laser of Love? ? the ?Der Kommissar? band with an earlier single that was being positioned as the station anthem Jam, ?Going Underground? Amazulu, ?Excitable? Rolling Stones, ?It?s All Over Now? Pat Benatar, ?Love Is a Battlefield? Feargal Sharkey, ?Lovin? You? Here?s the station representing July 1985: Arrow, ?Long Time? Elvis Presley, ?Way Down? Harold Faltermeyer, ?Axel F? Tracey Ullman, ?Breakaway? Steve Arrington, ?Dancin? in the Key of Life? Billy Ocean, ?Mystery Lady? U2, ?The Unforgettable Fire? Cyndi Lauper, ?The Goonies ?R? Good Enough? Fine Young Cannibals, ?Johnny Come Home? Finally, here?s a segment whose music puts it in late 1986: Modern Romance, ?Don?t Stop that Crazy Rhythm? Mary Wells, ?My Guy? Simply Red, ?Money?s Too Tight (To Mention)? Nick Berry, ?Every Loser Wins? Supremes, ?Automatically Sunshine? ? forgotten in the U.S., but a UK top 10 from a great post-Diana Ross run of singles Danny Wilson, ?Mary?s Prayer? Freddie Jackson, ?Rock Me Tonight (For Old Time?s Sake)? Big Audio Dynamite, ?E=mc2? Isley Brothers, ?Summer Breeze? Prince, ?Raspberry Beret? more
