From Radio Insight: University of North Carolina Public News/Talk 91.5 WUNC-FM Chapel Hill/Raleigh NC will shut down its AAA “WUNC Music” streaming and HD2 brand at the end of the month. WUNC launched the service in August 2016. WUNC President/General Manager Paul Hunton stated that the original plan for WUNC Music was to secure a terrestrial signal but “the shifting economic and listening dynamics of broadcast radio have made that challenging”. At the time it was the only AAA in the market, but would be joined by Capitol Broadcasting’s “That Station” 1550 WCLY/95.7 W239CK Raleigh in May 2018. WUNC Music Director Brian Burns will move to WUNC’s digital news team. Burns also hosted “Future Shock” for the station. Hunton added, “Our commitment to music culture remains strong as we pivot to engage audiences in new and innovative ways. By realigning our resources, we aim to bring more music coverage to our original programs, website, and social media channels. Our goal is to solidify WUNC’s position as an important source of information for the music scene in the Triangle and beyond. This strategic shift will allow us to better serve our community by providing richer, more diverse content that highlights the dynamic music culture of North Carolina.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Brian for his outstanding work and unwavering commitment. His contributions have truly made a difference, and we look forward to his continued impact on all of our content initiatives. WUNC remains dedicated to serving our listeners with the highest quality content and are excited about the opportunities ahead. more

From Radio Insight: FCC ActionsFollowing a proposal submitted last week from Commander Communications Corporation on behalf of its “Smooth Soul 100.5” WRTM-FM Sharon MS, the FCC is seeking comments in regards to creating a new station class “A10” with a maximum of 10,000 watts effective radiated power (ERP) and 100 meters height above average terrain (HAAT). The proposal also seeks to amend existing facility requirements and minimum distance separation requirements to accommodate the new FM station class. The Class A10 stations would be required to operate with between 6kW and 10kW ERP at the equivalent of 100 meters HAAT. The proposal is another attempt to create a station class between a Class A and C3 following the rejected Class C4 proposal that would’ve created a class of stations operating at 12kW from a reference antenna height of 100 meters above average terrain in Zone II. Unlike that proposal, the A10 class is meant to be utilized across all zones. The proposal with the proposed spacing requirements can be read here. From Radio Insight: Townsquare Media’s Tri Cities Divestiture Trust has turned in the license of the former Classic Hits “97.5 Kool-FM” KOLW Basin City/Kennewick WA. Overseen by trustee Alan Blum, the trust was created in 2022 following Townsquare’s purchase of Cherry Creek Media that brought both company’s clusters in the Kennewick/Richland/Pasco market together. At the time of closing, Townsquare moved KOLW’s CHR “Kiss-FM” format to 105.3 KONA-FM Kennewick and flipped KOLW to Classic Hits “97.5 Kool-FM” resurrecting the branding heard on the station from 2004 to 2013. That programming would remain until the station was taken silent in January with Blum noting, ?Due to economic conditions in the market, the licensee was forced to take the station off the air temporarily. The licensee respectfully requests special temporary authority for the station to remain silent. The licensee will promptly notify the Commission when it is able to resume station operations.? Townsquare’s Kennewick/Richland/Pasco cluster includes: Regional Mexican ?La Super 92.5? From Radio Insight: The good news about Top 40 was coming in at a fairly rapid clip last week. I profiled WKST (96.1 Kiss) Pittsburgh, Pa., and WHTZ (Z100) New York, but May?s PPM ratings had two dozen other success stories I could have as easily written about. (WRVW Nashville went 4.9-5.8 later that day, along with several other rebounds.) Last Tuesday, Billboard published a story about the reduced footprint of bringbacks and reissues on the Hot 100, attributed to a better flow of superstar product. That Wednesday, LiveLine?s John Garabedian noted that the bulk of the syndicated night show?s requests were suddenly for new music. That same day, the Washington Post declared* ?The Song of Summer is Happening Whether You Like It or Not? after years of being ?not worth talking about.?* That made this tweet the next day from the Wall Street Journal that much more curious: For pop fans, the first half of 2024 was supposed to be the best ever, with new albums from Taylor Swift, Beyonc?, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa. As it turns out, ?Pop Girl Spring??as some called it?has ended up?kind of meh. more
