From Radio Insight: When Ross Davies was attending Radiodays Europe, this year?s edition of which was held in Munich last month, he e-mailed a favorite quote from one of the speakers about the year?s hot topic, the role of AI in radio. ?It?s an exciting time to be scared shitless.? Broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada already have the scared-shitless part down. Davies is looking to bring the excitement to the second Radiodays North America, scheduled for Toronto June 2-4. RDNA is a companion to Canadian Music Week, Canada?s equivalent of SXSW, under longtime head Neill Dixon. The first RDNA agenda stood out for its willingness to ask hard questions: ?Has PPM measurement been worth it? Can radio handle the truth?? This year, Ross on Radio will again highlight ?The Road to RDNA? with a look at scheduled highlights from the sessions, as well as longer pieces on some of the planned topics. Highlights so far include keynoter/BBC Radio head of music Lorna Clarke, promotions guru Paige Nienaber, and a TikTok panel featuring Lauren Hunter, known for one of the best promotions of recent years. (I?ll be part of a panel on the evolution of Classic Hits.) ?The Road to RDNA ?24? begins this week with a conversation with Davies ? what he saw at RDE and what he envisions for Toronto this year. SEAN ROSS: You?re one of Canada?s most prominent radio programmers. Please tell readers a little about your background and how it led to the evolution of RDNA.* ROSS DAVIES: My father was in the radio business in Canada, and so I essentially was raised all around radio growing up.* Living in Montreal, listening to AM top 40 radio like CKGM and at night WABC and some of the big US top 40 stations was all I needed to know that’s where I wanted to be.** My father got me my first job in Vancouver, B.C., at CKLG (now CFOX), working as a student intern.* I did everything there, from scrubbing carts to operating, music library and ultimately on the air as the all-night jock at CKLG-FM, one of the first free-form progressive rock stations back in the early ?70s.* I knew quickly that I was better “off the air” than on, and that sent me into the programming area.** I got my first PD gig in Calgary, launching CJAY 92.* Ultimately my goal was to get to Toronto and work for CHUM Radio.* I got there in 1979 and worked my way up to eventually become Operations Manager and Program Director for both CHUM and CHUM-FM, then into corporate as VP Programming.* I held a similar position at Astral Media, then was hired to launch XM Satellite Radio’s Canadian channels in the early 2000s. Once I decided to take a step back from the day-to-day radio business, and knowing I still had gas left in the tank, I wanted to keep doing things for the broadcast industry to help keep it moving forward. Broadcasters asked if I could help our national radio conference. As you know, I’m a big fan of Radiodays Europe.* I’ve always felt this conference was way more forward-leaning compared to the conferences here in North America.* I thought this would be a great way to bring some of that to broadcasters in Canada and the U.S.* As a result, we are now entering our second year of Radiodays North America, bringing a much-needed global presence here in North America. SEAN: Let’s talk a little about the role that RDNA is trying to play at a time when there are fewer radio conventions in North America overall. DAVIES: As you know, our industry here has been under a lot of pressure these past few years.* Declining audiences, new unlicensed digital operators, and advertising revenue declines.* The competition has intensified dramatically.* I think we in radio got stuck looking inside, got focused on cost cutting, doubling and tripling the workload on our staff, just trying to stay alive and hold on to those great profit margins.** As a result, we didn’t move forward.*Europe was talking about digital audio and podcasting before it was even on our radar.* They celebrate radio there, and their annual conventions show that.* And they can bring on a wealth of talent from all the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia ? some very brilliant people.* Our conventions lacked that. SEAN: What impressed you at Munich this year? DAVIES: Radiodays Munich set an all-time attendance record of over 1,500 delegates.*It was three full days of content touching on virtually every aspect of the audio business.*The subject of AI was an overwhelming presence at the conference, so much so that RDE built in an additional AI Summit on the Sunday before the full conference started.* During the two full conference days, there were a number of additional AI sessions that were all standing-room-only.** I heard lots of excitement, lots of opportunities, and lots of concerns about AI.* We are all still in the early stages of how best to implement this into our operations. Concerns around AI deep fakes and AI bias were talked about at length, as well as getting the right balance between humanity and machines. There were concerns about detection tools, synthetic voices, voice cloning. New strategies and new mechanisms to reach new audiences with moderator Martin Liss was SRO.**There were multiple sessions on youth audiences. There was a great morning-show interview with Greg James from BBC Radio 1 and a separate Aled Haydn Jones presentation about Gen Z. Nik Goodman?s ?How to be a better program director? was done in the round to a packed room. And a couple of sessions from Australian radio, where business in booming.* We plan to bring a lot of this to Toronto in June. SEAN: Over the course of the next 7-8 weeks, we’re going to talk about all the panels in some form, but please tell readers about a few now that you’re particularly excited about. DAVIES: We’ve secured a great opening keynote on Monday morning with the Head of BBC Music, Lorna Clarke.* What a great resume!* BBC has their hands in everything music-related: over-the-air radio, BBC Sounds , television specials, and outdoor events.* There’s clearly something we can glean from all that.** We’ve also developed three different sessions all around AI.* Matt Britton will be here talking about AI and Gen Z, we have an open and frank AI Round Table planned, and we’re conducting an AI Workshop, where the audience will be involved with creating an AI Radio Station.* And we’ve really stepped up on podcasting this year: We have a Sunday ?Podcast Power Up Summit? scheduled for those relatively new to the podcast business, which will involve people like James Cridland and Eric Nuzum. SEAN: We?ve just come out of Podcast Movement. There are a lot of podcasting seminars these days. What’s RDNA’s unique take on podcasting, especially for broadcasters? DAVIES: It’s real and it’s an opportunity. There are right ways about going about it and wrong ways.* One of the sessions Eric Nuzum is going to do is called* “Why Podcasts Fail”.* At the same time, we’ve got sessions on how to grow revenue through podcasts.* This applies both to the “pure podcasters” and the large broadcast organizations who have jumped into the podcast pool. SEAN: Finally, what are some of the lessons of RDNA ?23 in terms of how the first one is shaping this one, and what’s going to be even better this year? DAVIES: We had great feedback from last year’s event, perhaps best explained by this comment from Coleman Insights? Warren Kurtzman:*?Radiodays North America ?23 was nothing short of a smashing success. In fact, it was so good that I am writing this as I fly home from Toronto with renewed energy for our business, and I feel compelled to tell everyone ? and especially my clients and colleagues in the American radio business ? to set aside the time and budget to attend Radiodays North America in 2024.? This speaks to our need to get the word out to our colleagues in the U.S.* This is a real learning conference and one that you will come away from inspired and full of energy.* And you’ll get to visit one of North America’s greatest and most diverse cities. And the U.S. dollar is worth roughly 30% more than the Canadian dollar. A full RDNA agenda (so far) is available here. See hotel information here. more

From Radio Insight: Syndicator Genesis Communications Network has informed its program hosts and producers that it will cease operations as of Sunday, May 5. Launched in 1998 by Ted Anderson as a way to promote his precious metals brokerage Midas Resources, the network is best known for being the distributor of the Alex Jones Show. Basing the decision on “poor economic and industry conditions”, GCN’s website lists many shows that have departed for other distributors over the years. Among the other shows it is still involved with are the KTTH Seattle based Michael Medved Show, The Joe Messina Show, Dr. Asa On Call, LockNLoad, Bill Martinez Live, and Dr. Daliah Wachs. As Genesis Communications Network, whom I love dearly, goes through a transition, we are working with other networks to keep working with our affiliates. The Dr. Daliah Show is not planning on going anywhere thanks to you all!! 15 years and rising! The show will go on! more

From Radio Insight: About 40 minutes into the hour I was listening to on the UK?s non-commercial Top 40 BBC Radio 1,the midday team played a recurring Tuesday game called ?Mess with Melvin,? a variant on ?two lies and the truth.? Both stories involved acts playing Radio 1?s forthcoming Big Weekend festival. One involved Raye and Olly Alexander, the former lead singer of Years and Years. The other was about the headliner, Coldplay. The fake story was that Alexander discovered Raye after hearing her demo tape at a house party; it sounded entirely credible until co-host Rickie mentioned that he then found her sleeping under a pile of coats. The true story was that ?Yellow? took its name from a nearby copy of the Yellow Pages. But hearing Coldplay casually mentioned as the headliner of a Top 40 radio-station show that also featured Sabrina Carpenter, Teddy Swims, and Vampire Weekend is what got my attention. For the last three hours, I?ve been listening to the BBC?s Top 40 Radio 1, full-service AC Radio 2, and its Triple-A, Radio 6 Music. On 6 Music, American indie artist Julia Halter was being interviewed about the live in-studio session she was going to play the following hour. Radio 6 Music also played a track by the DJ/producer Nia Archives. When I listened to Radio 1, Rickie, Melvin & Charlie were excitedly front-selling a different track by her.* On Radio 2, which has famously contemporized in recent years, fill-in middayer Gary David was spotlighting a new single from the Libertines. There was also the ongoing Tracks of My Years bit in which TV fitness personality Joe Wicks was talking about key songs in his life. ?Gone? by Jack Johnson reminded him of a trip to Australia when he had finally bonded with his dad as an adult. ?When You Were Young? was because of a bike trip with his brother when they inadvertently wandered into a Killers set at a Spanish music festival. You hear a lot about music and artists listening to the BBC. The only thing comparable in terms of new (and old) music advocacy in America is Triple-A radio. Key to the BBC?s always-expanding series of music channels is Director of Music Lorna Clarke, who will be the keynoter at the second Radiodays North America, to be held in Toronto June 2-4.* Ross on Radio is on the road to RDNA 2024 with an ongoing series of spotlights on key panels and key topics to be covered there. We took a Fresh Listen to those three key stations. (There are now brand-extension channels such as Radio 1 Dance. There are more planned, which has created controversy among existing commercial broadcasters.) For more about RDNA, see the current full schedule of panels here. Read my interview with veteran programmer Ross Davies, who is now overseeing RDNA, here. Here?s Radio 1 at 11 a.m., April 9: Dua Lipa, ?Training Season? Kendrick Lamar, ?Humble? DJ Snake & Lil Jon, ?Turn Down for What? ? each team member had pitched a song choice, this was the winner Rachel Chinouriri, ?Never Need Me? ? female Modern AC; in general, there was a particularly noticeable indie pop/rock feel on this listen Frank Ocean, ?Pink + White? Michael Marcagi, ?Scared to Start? Nia Archives, ?Unfinished Business? Tame Impala, ?Is It True? The Weeknd, ?Blinding Lights? Madison Beer, ?Make You Mine? Declan McKenna, ?Beautiful Faces? ? sounded a lot like ?Sour Girl? by Stone Temple Pilots Maggie Rogers, ?Don?t Forget Me? Central Cee, ?I Will? Sub Focus, ?Off the Ground? Young Filly, ?Grey? Here?s Radio 2 during the same hour: Boomtown Rats, ?I Don?t Like Mondays? ? ?I should have played this yesterday,? said David Cat Burns, ?Alone? Madonna, ?Secret? Libertines, ?Be Young? Bruno Mars, ?Just the Way You Are? ? This was followed by a preview of Jeremy Vines? more topical midday show. Today?s show included a scandal involving an evangelist as well as garages that are so small that some drivers have to climb out through the trunk. That led to a story about the late BBC DJ Steve Wright, who once had to do just that. Griff, ?Miss Me Too? Jack Johnson, ?Gone? Killers, ?When You Were Young? Old Dominion w/Blake Shelton, ?Ain?t Got a Worry? ? Radio 2 has been known for championing Country in recent years, often songs that aren?t U.S. radio singles Chaka Khan, ?I?m Every Woman? Finally, here?s 6 Music at the same hour with Mary Anne Hobbs: Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man, ?Turn the Model? Mitski, ?Heaven? ? Hobbs announced her as headliner at the forthcoming All Points East festival, where 6 Music will have its own stage Richard Hawley, ?Two for His Heels? Nirvana, ?Aneurism? ? Hobbs crossplugged both a Kurt Cobain tribute, with interviews from Steve Albini and others, along with a Courtney Love ?Bad Gals? playlist Nia Archives, ?Bad Gyalz? Damian ?Jr. Gong? Marley & Nas, ?As We Enter? Joe Armon-Jones, ?Nubya?s Side of Town? MJ Cole, ?Crazy Love? Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx, ?I?ll Take Care of You? ? known to many more as the track behind Drake & Rihanna?s ?Take Care? John Grant, ?It?s a Bitch? Supremes, ?You Keep Me Hangin? On? Hagan, ?Waves? From Radio Insight: Cumulus Media Classic Rock “101 The Fox” KCFX Harrisonville/Kansas City MO afternoon host Brian ‘Slacker’ Adams has passed away at the age of 59 from acute myeloid leukemia. Adams spent 33 years on the air in Kansas City and had been with KCFX since 2008 after previous stints at 102.1 KYYS and successor 99.7 KYYS. He moved to afternoons in December after being away from his former morning shift for four months due to treatment. The station released the following statement, “It is with a broken heart that we share with you that our friend Slacker has passed away due to complications from AML. His wife Jennifer and daughter Brianna were with him at home as he left this life. We know you?ll join us at 101 The Fox in expressing your heartfelt condolences to Slacker?s family. Slacker had two great passions – his family, and his time on the air in Kansas City. For over 33 years, the last 16 at 101 The Fox, Slacker loved to entertain his radio audience. He helped Veterans with Cars 4 Heroes and many other charities. He pointed out the little absurdities we all deal with, making us laugh at him and ourselves. Named Radio Legend by his peers, Slacker was a voice of, and for, Kansas City. Sadly, that voice is now silent. If you choose, Slacker asked that you pray for his family, and all who are affected by cancer. And pick up the phone and talk to that friend you haven’t gotten around to talking to, today. Slacker would like that.” KCFX will air a tribute “Slacker Special” at 6pm tonight with him talking about his favorite interviews, music, and what he loved about being on the radio in Kansas City. more
