From Radio Insight: The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has released new broadcast station self-inspection guides for FM and television stations. These two guides assist broadcasters in conducting a self-inspection of their stations. Guides for AM, low-power and translator stations are expected to be released soon. NAB joined with the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) to provide up-to-date, standardized guidance toward compliance with FCC rules and policies. Up until 2003, the FCC published self-inspection checklists, but has ceased updating them although rules and policies have changed since that time. The guides are also intended to be used by contract inspectors who are part of the Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program, which are contracted by most state broadcaster associations. Availability of the self-inspection guides will be announced at NAB Show at a joint NAB/SBE session on Tuesday, April 16, 3:30 ? 4:30 p.m. at the Connect Zone Conversation Corner (LVCC West Hall, W3943), ?FCC Enforcement ? New Self-Inspection Guides Can Help Your Station Avoid Fines.? Representatives from NAB, the National Alliance of State Broadcasters Association (NASBA) and SBE will present the new guides and will be available to answer questions. The guides will initially be a free member benefit to NAB and SBE members. The guides will be available for download from the NAB website under the Membership / Member Tools / Member Downloads tab as well as from SBE. ?NAB is excited to announce these self-inspection guides as a benefit to both NAB and SBE members,? said Robert Weller, vice president for spectrum policy at NAB. ?The success of this project was possible through close collaboration between our organizations and demonstrates the commitment of broadcasters to proper station operation.? more

From Radio Insight: Global Music Rights has announced a settlement has been reache in its multi-million dollar lawsuit against Lyndonville VT based Vermont Broadcast Associates for “the station group?s repeated and willful infringement of copyrighted songs licensed by GMR”. GMR and VBA state “they are pleased to have reached an agreement, which includes a long-term GMR license entered into between the parties, as well as settlement of past alleged infringements”. Vermont Broadcast Associates owns seven stations in northeastern Vermont. In the lawsuit, GMR had stated that “Prior to filing the lawsuit, GMR repeatedly offered a license to VBA. When GMR received no response, GMR sent a cease-and-desist letter to VBA. VBA blatantly ignored the license offers and cease-and-desist letter and continued to knowingly play popular songs by GMR?s clients without a license. GMR?s outside counsel, O?Melveny & Myers, subsequently sent VBA infringement notices. VBA took no action to stop performing the GMR songs, settle its prior infringements, or enter into a license with GMR. Left with no other recourse, GMR filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against VBA this week to protect the rights of GMR?s songwriters and composers.” GMR?s General Counsel, Emio Zizza, commented, ?We are dedicated to protecting the rights of GMR songwriters and composers, and ensuring entities publicly performing their works are appropriately licensed. Through this lawsuit, we have accomplished those endeavors, and look forward to our go-forward licensing relationship with VBA.? more

From Radio Insight: Xperi’s DTS Autostage has released its first log of the most listened-to-songs in vehicles using its platform for the year in 2023 and during the first quarter of 2024. The new Song Impact Report comes from the analytics provided by the DTS AutoStage Broadcaster Portal, which provides stations with insights into where their audiences are listening, when they are listening, how long they are listening and the content they enjoy the most from vehicles equipped with the platform. For the first three months of 2024 the most listened to song in the United States was Jack Harlow’s ?Lovin on Me? after Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” *led both the US and internationally for 2023. Swift fell to number three in Q1 with Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” leading the global chart. Tate McRae’s “Greedy” was number two on both listings. Top Five Most Listened-To Songs In-Vehicle Global Q1 2024* **** Artist Song Dua Lipa ?Houdini? Tate McRae ?Greedy? Taylor Swift ?Cruel Summer? Jack Harlow ?Lovin on Me ? Tyla ?Water? Xperi SVP/Broadcast Joe D’Angelo stated, “These lists chart actual sessions by in-vehicle radio listeners and are just the opening salvo of our data insights for broadcasters, which go deep into where, when and what in-vehicle listeners are enjoying, including listener heat maps and the songs, ads and program segments listeners enjoy the most. And, because we can track radio plays for songs across all our global radio station partners, we?re able to analyze specific scenarios and trends. For example, how a song might be breaking and how the audience is responding.? The company also spotlighted the 2023 growth of Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” as it became the fifth most listened to song in the United States. *Xperi notes that the song started receiving some early spins in March ahead of its official release in April 2023. It took just five weeks to break into the Top 100 and hit #1 the week of July 24. By the time it hit #1, it had already been heard by listeners in AutoStage enabled cars 650,000 times over 1100 different radio stations. By the end of 2023, it had been heard over four million times. They also note that Chapman’s original version jumped to 292 most played the week she performed with Combs at the Grammy’s in February. D’Angelo added, “The radio industry has long reported spins, which provided some measure of a song?s performance, but in today?s digital age, it?s really all about the listener and how they are responding to new music. For the first time, broadcast radio program directors and record promoters can access near real-time information about how a song is actually landing with the audience and if engagement is building, waning or flattening. This information is critical as both industries make decisions regarding programming, rotations and artist promotions.” Stations are able to access the DTS AutoStage Broadcaster Portal at no cost, whether or not the broadcast digitally or not through the Xperi DTS AutoStage Broadcaster portal.
