From Radio Insight: From RadioInsight In a universe far away from where traditional AM/FM radio broadcasters live a massive radio station launch took place this week that is getting more national media attention than nearly every commercial radio launch this year combined. Musician Frank Ocean launched “a radio station” in the most recent update to the video game Grand Theft Auto 5. Ocean’s “Blonded Los Santos 97.8 FM” is the nineteenth station in the game and features 28 songs stretching from Ocean himself, Jay-Z, Mervin Gaye, Migos, and Todd Rundgren. Like every station in the game, which are available as players are driving around on missions, the station features personalities (in this case Vegyn, Roof Access, and Federico Aliprandi who hosted Ocean’s Blonded Radio on Apple’s Beats 1 earlier this year), imaging that both pays tribute and mocks various radio stations and formats, and sharply produced commercials that in many cases could pass off as real. Other stations in the game include DJ’s ranging from syndicated personality Big Boy and Don Cheto, to musicians like Kenny Loggins and Bootsy Collins, and actors Cara Delevingne and Pam Grier. Brief clips of each station can be heard here. As of May 2017 the game had sold over 80 million copies worldwide since its launch in 2013. To compare that to other broadcasters, SiriusXM currently has 32 million subscribers and Spotify has 140 million active users. As more and more listeners are spread beyond the confines of AM/FM and the definition of what could be considered radio grows, this shows the opportunity that exists for broadcasters to create or partner on unique platforms to reach potential listeners that go beyond just the usual broadcast or on-demand podcast. Clearly, it was a drunk dial. Endless thanks to Casey Krukowski, Gene Romano, Tony Travatto and Lisa Worden for being #ALLIN on The Woody Show!” “We’re really excited to bring The Woody Show to Detroit,” said Tony Travatto, Regional Senior Vice President of Programming, iHeartMedia Detroit. “The show is real and funny and we think it’s a perfect fit for ALT 106.7. From Radio Insight: From RadioInsight ESPN’s “ESPN LA 710” KSPN Los Angeles is adding college basketball analyst Sean Farnham to its afternoon show starting Thursday, January 4. Farnham will join existing co-hosts Marcellus Wiley and Eric Davis for what will be rebranded as “Afternoons with Marcellus, Farnham and E.D.” from 3-7pm. That is if Davis remains with the company as he is currently under suspension while being investigated for sexual harassment claims while working at NFL Network. The former UCLA basketball star will continue to serve as a college basketball analyst for ESPN’s networks in addition to his new duties at KSPN. ESPN college basketball analyst Sean Farnham is expanding his role to include co-hosting with Marcellus Wiley and Eric Davis starting Thursday, Jan. 4, on ESPNLA 710. The newly renamed Afternoons with Marcellus, Farnham and E.D. will air weekdays from 3 – 7 p.m. PT. “I am so excited to join Marcellus and E.D. on ESPNLA710,” said Farnham. “Radio to me has always been about connecting and driving the passion of the sports fans on the topics that matter most to us in our city. I started in radio with ESPNLA710 in 2004 and 13 years later it feels great to return home.” “We could not be more excited to welcome Sean to the team,” said Scott McCarthy, vice president and general manager of ESPNLA. “He obviously has deep roots here in LA, including as a player on terrific UCLA squads and as a coach at Pepperdine. He also has a great passion for sports and a very strong track record as an entertaining and informative radio talent.” In addition to his Afternoons with Marcellus, Farnham and E.D role, Farnham will continue as college basketball analyst calling games across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and SEC Network for various conferences, including SEC, Pac-12 and West Coast Conference. Farnham Bio Farnham was a student-athlete at UCLA where he was a freshman on the 1997 Pac-10 Championship team that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. He was named UCLA’s Freshman of the Year that year, Most Improved Player in 1999 and was the 1999-2000 co-captain with Earl Watson. Farnham was also the Chairman of the Bruins Athletic Council, and represented UCLA at the Pac-10 leadership forum both of his final two years on campus. After graduating from UCLA, Farnham was an assistant coach at Pepperdine University under the guidance of Jan van Breda Kolff. The Waves finished with a 22-9 record and advanced to the NIT second round. Starting in the fall of 2001 Farnham worked at Fox Sports Net/West covering everything from the Pac-10, Big West and WCC basketball, as well as NBA, MLB and college football. During his 10-year run at Fox Sports Net, he won two Los Angeles-based Emmys. The post ESPN 710 Los Angeles Revamps Afternoon Show appeared first on RadioInsight. more

From Radio Insight: From RadioInsight Cumulus Media News/Talk 890 WLS Chicago is revamping its lineup for 2018. Exiting the station are 10am-12pm hosts Bob Sirott and Marianne Murciano. The married couple joined WLS one year ago after previously hosting together at WFLD-TV, 105.9 WCKG, and 720 WGN. Sirott was previously a DJ during the station’s Top 40 heyday from 1973-1980. They will be replaced by Cumulus’ syndicated Chris Plante. Plante, based at 630/105.9 WMAL Washington DC will air live from 9am-11am. Along with the addition of Plante, Big John Howell and Ramblin’ Ray Stevens’ morning show will move from 6-10am to 5:30-9am, Rush Limbaugh’s show will move back to a live clearance from 11am-2pm instead of being delayed one hour, and Steve Dahl will move up from 3-7pm to 2-6pm. Cumulus Media-Chicago announces an enhanced new programming line-up for Chicago News/Talk radio station WLS-AM 890 featuring live broadcasts of The Chris Plante Show and The Rush Limbaugh Show. Beginning January 1, 2018, The Chris Plante Show, nationally syndicated by Westwood One, will broadcast live on WLS-AM 890 weekdays from 9am-11am, with The Rush Limbaugh Show returning to a live feed from 11am-2pm weekdays on WLS-AM 890. Peter Bolger, Operations Manager/Program Director, WLS-AM 890, said: “Listeners made it very clear they wanted to hear Rush Limbaugh live. People want to call in to the show. And in this busy news cycle, it’s important he talk about what’s happening in real time.” * Marv Nyren, Vice President/Market Manager, Cumulus Media-Chicago, said: “With the addition of Chris Plante, I’m pleased that we have great continuity between the end of Big John and Ramblin’ Ray’s show at 9, and the start of Rush at 11. It just makes good sense.” * After 17 years at CNN assigned to the Pentagon and covering U.S. military and intelligence communications, Chicago native Chris Plante joined Washington, D.C. News/Talk radio station, WMAL. In 2016, his program was nationally syndicated through Westwood One. Plante brings a unique world-view to radio, and largely conservative/libertarian values to his role as talk show host. Although he hastens to add he marches in lock step with no politician, Chris says his political party is “Practi-crat”, “…because of my distinctly practical political leanings.” * Plante*said: “I look forward to being the Washington embed, giving a first-hand description of what’s happening in Washington and what it can mean to my hometown of Chicago, where I grew up listening to WLS!” * Added Bolger: “This line-up, with local icons Big John and Ray as well as Steve Dahl, and strong hosts with a national perspective, is a spot on response to what our listeners said they wanted and expected from WLS-AM 890.”* The post WLS To Drop Bob Sirott and Marianne Murciano; Add Chris Plante appeared first on RadioInsight. more
