From Radio Insight: Cumulus Media Classic Rock 92.5 KQRS-FM Golden Valley/Minneapolis has gone jockless and “Under Construction” promoting a station relaunch for Thursday, April 3. KQRS-FM tied for tenth in the Twin Cities with a 4.1 share in the January 2025 Nielsen Audio ratings. Sweepers heard during the stunt included, “Pardon our dust, build a new KQ we must” and “Come back April 3 to find out what’s next for 92 KQRS”. more

From Radio Insight: Audacy AC “B101” morning co-host Jenn Ryan announced she will be retiring from the station on Monday, March 31. Ryan joined WBEB in 2009 as midday host before moving to mornings in 2013. She would be paired with Michael Chew until 2015 when Bill Tafrow moved up from producer. Prior to WBEB, Ryan worked at Soft AC “Sunny 104.5” WSNI Philadelphia and co-hosted mornings at Classic Hits “107.5 Frank-FM” WFKB Reading. Ryan told listeners this morning, “This is with very mixed emotions that I want to tell you guys that I am retiring from radio. After 32 years of working in radio, which has been the best career that I ever could have had. Exactly half of it, 16 years, has been right here on B101, and this has been the most joyous time of my life – I mean my marriage, my kids, and my job here on the B. Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. I love you, Bill, and Laura I love you as well, and I love each and every one of you listeners. For a lot of us we have spent our mornings together here for the last 14 years. I did mid-days on B101 for my first two years, and then I switched over to the morning show, and that is when we really got to know each other All of us, we have shared lots of personal stories, pieces of our lives with each other over the years, but mostly, we’ve laughed together. Every single morning, that has been the highlight for me, spending 14 years just laughing and having fun and being happy every weekday morning with each of you.” Tafrow told Ryan, “I’ve been with this morning show, in so many different versions of this morning show since 2004. Friends was still on, think about that. You and I started in 2014 doing this together. I had 3 shots at being the co-host, 3 shots at the job. First two failed. Third time was with you. Coworker said to me a year after, ‘Well I guess the third time was the charm.’ I said, ‘No, the charm was Jenn Ryan, that was the charm.’ I can’t do this without you. I can’t imagine doing it without you. You’re my best friend here, my work wife. We’ve been through pandemics together, snow storms together, sleepless nights, lots of whining and crying, and I think this is justified. Doing this show, my heart is full with you.” Boss, who will continue in mornings with Tafrow, added, “I mean, I can’t follow Billy, that was so sweet. Obviously, I just want to thank you for everything that you’ve done for this morning show, and for B101. I have worked with a lot of morning shows, and you guys, I mean, not to throw shade on anyone else they’ve been wonderful, but you are fantastic to work with. We were instant friends, you were extremely welcoming, and it’s because you’re both so down to earth. We’ve had so much fun. We spend so much time together. Jenn, I think you know more about my life than some of my closest family and friends, and I’m just going to miss you so much. You’ve set such a great example for everyone here in radio. I look up to you, I feel like I’ve learned so much from you, and just appreciate everything.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by B101 Philly more

From Radio Insight: It?s a very special radio promotion that can make a difference in listeners? lives beyond a cash prize. That was the case with one of the 10 best international contests of the last year highlighted at Radiodays Europe, held this year in Athens, March 9-11.* The annual session, anchored by Niall Power, head of sound and morning host of*Southeast Ireland?s Beat 102-103, is one of each year?s highlights since resuming post-COVID two years ago. (RDE remains one of the world?s best, most-exciting radio conventions. Its third-annual sister event, Radiodays North America, comes to Toronto May 7-8). (I?ve noted in previous years that there have been few North American promotions big enough to have made Power?s list. That could be different next year. The U.S./Canada tariff war has prompted a display of national pride among broadcasters centered around Canadian artists, and providing something more to tap into than just a concert tour. Classic Hits CHBM (Boom 97.3) Torontois doing more to highlight acts ?Made in Canada.? Group owner Corus declared ?Canadian Day?across nearly 25 stations that went all Cancon on March 1.)* Here were some of Power?s highlights, leading with a favorite that taps into some of the same emotions as the long-popular ?Second Chance Prom? promotion. Cash and concert tickets may always be welcome. Making adolescence less torturous is something else entirely.* ?The Underdogs at Marvel Stadium? ? Top 40 Fox 101.9 Melbourne, Australia breakfast team Fifi, Fev & Nick put together a football team of kids who had been excluded from school sports because of bullying, health issues, or for other reasons. The team played an exhibition game for a sold-out crowd at Marvel Stadium. Since then, the trio have formed a second team, this time for basketball. * BBC Radio 1?s ?Giant Detention? ?National Top 40 powerhouse BBC Radio 1 has figured into the Top 10 for each of the last two years. Head of programming Aled Haydn Jones was one of the opening day?s speakers on the station?s music process, following a session with BBC Radio 2?s Helen Thomas. ?Giant Detention? was an escape room variant with breakfast host Greg James sent to a classroom for alleged on-air comments about managers. Other DJs joined one by one to help crack a code and escape. ?Paper Planes? ? In what is probably the most easily adaptable promotion for any radio station, Ant1 Cyprusdisplayed a car with windows open at a local mall. Customers of the mall?s stores got an entry form, which they then made into a paper plane and could throw into the car. The grand prize winner got E500. There were bonus prizes for other listeners who heard their name called. Taylor Swift?s Eras Tour has prompted some of American radio?s best promotions in recent years. Power?s Beat found a listener willing to get a ?Tat for Taylor,? in this case a stepfather who did it for the stepdaughter he was adopting. Ireland?s Today FM created a 100-meter installation on a beach, reading ?Ireland (Taylor?s Version),? meant to be visible from the air as Swift landed in Dublin.* Belgium?s Q Radio returned to the list this year when its breakfast show declared ?Dessert Day,? in which kids colored a station poster, then sent a picture of it hanging at home or school, to win a visit from the Dessert Man. Response was such that the station has declared it an annual holiday. The station is also repeating last year?s winner, ?The Forbidden Word,? at the moment; (the word its DJs are trying to avoid is ?always?). Athens radio stations Classic Rock Red 96.3 and eclectic En Lefko 87.7 both had new personality hirings to announce. Their ?Just Landed? saw both presenters literally skydive into their new stations ? an event that was particularly anxiety-provoking for one of them.* Melbourne?s Gold 104.3?s ?Beer Race? tested whether listeners could literally hold their liquor by making two of them race with a pair of beer mugs. (The second-place finisher won for having less spillage.) Melbourne?s morning-show battle, including Gold?s Christian O?Connell, has been enough of a radio story worldwide that a Radiodays panel was devoted to it this year, as well as two featuring another celebrity DJ, Jackie-O of sister Kiss-FM. Top 40 FM104 Dublinpitted listeners against each other to win E20,000 in ?Quid Games,? which included rock, paper, scissors, Jenga, and ?What?s in the Box? (but nothing actually life-threatening). Belgium?s VRT MNM tested its morning man with Sander vs. Time, in which the station kept its morning host on for a week, eliminated its usual benchmarks, and made him guess when the week had elapsed (he was 90 minutes off).* more

From Radio Insight: My Broadcasting Corporation has completed its acquisition of four stations from Bell Media in Brockville and Kingston ON and beginning the process of programming changes at all four. All four stations are currently running with no imaging outside of the remaining local on-air staffers directing listeners to an online survey regarding what they’d like to hear. The new format identities are set to launch later this week, however their streams on the iHeartRadio app show the upcoming identities. In Kingston, AC “Move 98.3” CFLY-FM will return to its heritage “98.3 Fly-FM” positioning as “Today’s Best Music”. Current airstaffers including morning hosts Reid & Ben and midday host Trinette Atkinson remain in place. Country “Pure Country 99” CKLC-FM will rebrand as “New Country 98.9“. Gary ?Big G? McColman and Wayne ?Matty? Mathews will move from sister Classic Hits “102.7 Wow-FM” WLYK Cape Vincent NY to host mornings. The duo joined WLYK last July after spending sixteen years at Rogers Sports & Entertainment?s ?Country 93.5? CKXC-FM Kingston from 2004 to 2020. Replacing them at WLYK are Iliad Media Group’s “Joey & Lauren” show based at KZMG Boise. In Brockville, Variety Hits ?Bounce 103.7? CJPT-FM will flip to Classic Rock “103.7 Giant-FM“. From Radio Insight: The merger and acquisition rumor mill went into overdrive this afternoon with a pair of possible group sales. First Bloomberg reported that Apollo Global Management has hired asset manager Moelis & Co. to explore a sale of Cox Media Group. Bloomberg estimates that a sale including Cox’s television and radio stations could net $4 billion with people familiar with the matter saying there is a “preference to sell the holdings to a buyer that can take on most of the company rather than carving up the channels among a larger group of parties.” It added, “There’s no certainty the deliberations will result in a transaction.” It has been an open secret for some time that Apollo never wanted the radio holdings when it first planned to acquire Cox’s television holdings along with its newspaper and radio stations in Dayton OH for $3.1 billion in February 2019 as well as the licenses of Northwest Television. Four months later after being unable to find a buyer for the radio division, Apollo acquired Cox’s 57 radio stations and CoxReps, Gaumt, and Cox?s Washington, D.C. news bureau operations for $500 million. After selling its four stations in Houston to Radio One in April 2023 for $27.5 million, Cox Media Group continues to operate station clusters in Athens GA, Atlanta, Dayton, Jacksonville, Long Island, Orlando, San Antonio, Tampa, and Tulsa Over the past week, I have also received a number of inquiries from sources questioning the validity of gossip that Alpha Media is about to be acquired. These inquiries from various unrelated segments of the business all named Connoisseur Media as the expected buyer. The Jeffrey Warshaw led Connoisseur currently operates eleven stations in Connecticut and Long Island following last summer’s sale of its two stations in Frederick MD. The company significantly downsized in 2018 and 2019 through a number of sales and swaps as it departed markets including Allentown PA, Billings MT, Erie PA, Hartford CT, Stroudsburg PA, and Trenton NJ. Some of our sources note that the primary investors in post-Chapter 11 bankruptcy Alpha Media have been seeking to exit their investment for quite some time. One of the sources noted that an announcement could come as soon as next week. Warshaw led a group in April 2022 that attempted to acquire Cumulus Media for $1.2 billion that would have taken the company private for between $15 and $17 per share, but was quickly dismissed with CEO Mary Berner stating that the Cumulus Board of Directors unanimously concluded that the indication of interest significantly undervalued the company. Cumulus stock closed today at 45 cents per share. more
