    From Radio Insight: The cuts continue at Meruelo Media Los Angeles as Rock 95.5 KLOS has dismissed afternoon hosts Kevin Ryder and Doug ‘Sluggo’ Roberts. Roberts, who joined KLOS in 2019 as APD/MD/afternoon host. He had a nearly 30 year run at Alternative 106.7 KROQ from 1990 until moving to KLOS in 2019 with eight of those years pulling double duty in New York on “92.3 K-Rock” WXRK from 1996 to 2004. He also was part of the music programming and writing team at Variety Hits “93.1 Jack-FM” KCBS-FM and has hosted shows on SiriusXM’s 80s Alternative “First Wave” and 90s Alternative “Lithium” since 2004. Ryder would join Roberts in February 2021 following an over 30 year run at KROQ. He and Gene ?Bean? Baxter anchored mornings together from 1989 until Baxter’s departure in 2019 and then continued with Jensen Karp and Allie MacKay until their firing in March 2020. The “Kevin & Bean” show was previously syndicated to other west coast markets including San Francisco, Fresno, Phoenix and Reno and they were inducted into both the National Radio Hall of Fame and the NAB Hall of Fame. Ryder, Baxter, Roberts and once and current KROQ Program Director Kevin Weatherly all came to KROQ from KZZP Phoenix in 1989 and 1990. Meruelo Media eliminated all four midday hosts on their stations in February with “Power 106” KPWR afternoon host ‘DJ Felli Fel’ exiting a week later. Meruleo since added Pio Ferro as SVP/Programming in May. The company then sold one of its two Los Angeles television stations, KWHY-TV to the Church of Scientology in July for $30 million. In addition to KLOS and KPWR, Meruelo owns Classic Hip Hop 93.5 KDAY and Spanish Hot AC “Cali 93.9” KLLI. The firings come as KLOS earlier on Friday started a “Where’s Kevin” marketing campaign with Honda to build awareness of he being at the station. In response to the speculation that Meruelo Media is looking to sell its radio properties in Los Angeles, Ryder told Variety, ?I hope they sell it to somebody who cares about it.?     From Radio Insight: Scottie Rice’s RCA Broadcasting has acquired Silent 99.7 KVUT Cuney TX from University of Texas at Tyler for $100,000. UT Tyler ceased operations of KVUT in May after attempting to launch a Public News/Talk brand on the station. It had acquired the signal in May 2020 and launched its programming in September 2020. RCA Broadcasting owns Classic Hits 1370 KFRO/94.1 K231DK Longview, which covers the eastern side of the Tyler/Longview market. At closing the station will revert to a commercial license and become KFRO-FM simulcasting the AM. Rice tells RadioInsight, “It’s great that ahead of KFRO’s upcoming 90th anniversary, we can finally provide Tyler and Jacksonville with the same great programming Longview has come to expect from us.” Scott Fybush served as broker for the buyer. Greg Guy’s Tideline Partners represented the seller. more

    From Radio Insight: I heard a great bit on CHR morning radio this week. It was about how to best load and maintain your dishwasher.* The discussion was part of the ?Ask the Experts? feature on Top 40 Nova 100 Melbourne, Australia.The morning team were Jase & Lauren ,who, along with newsman Clint Stanaway, had just become the No. 1 music morning show in Melbourne after fewer than 100 shows on the station. Jase & Lauren?s win was that much more notable for coming after months of massive national publicity about the arrival at KIIS-FM Melbourne of KIIS-FM Sydney superstars Kyle & Jackie O. That show, one of the world?s best-known in a country where radio hosts are multi-media stars, displaced Jase & Lauren and sent them across the street to Nova.* With echoes of Howard Stern expanding from New York to Philadelphia, the announcement prompted news stories about how ?live and local? wouldn?t be enough of a defense against compelling and notorious. During the first week in syndication, one of the show?s wrapped busses showed up at a Jase & Lauren appearance. When Hawkins expressed dismay that KIIS would first fire him, then troll him, Sandilands responded by calling him a ?crybaby.? For anybody who lived through Stern?s ascent, the next part seemed inevitable. But in the first Melbourne ratings, which included the debut, KIIS was flat (5.9-5.9) in mornings. In the just released first full ratings period, Kyle & Jackie O were up to a 6.1. But Jase & Lauren rose 8.7-9.6-9.9 during the same period, up from a 5.0 before their arrival. That made them the No. 1 music show in the market, trailing only N/T AM powerhouse 3AW.* Radio analyst James Cridland believes Kyle & Jackie O?s slow start was a function of launching in Melbourne with what he calls ?lazy smut,? not lack of a home-court advantage. In after-ratings comments quoted in Australia?s Radio Today, ARN chief content officer Duncan Campbell emphasizes that ?the battle is still on,? and believes the market will eventually hear past the ?sexualized content? of that first week.* While it?s true that these are early days, Jase & Lauren deserved a First Listen, just for riding out the initial hype. I heard them briefly during the Olympics. I listened again with more intent on the morning of August 27. That morning, Jase & Lauren began the 7 a.m. hour by teasing that after 7:30, they would unveil ?the one thing we agree on? (and disagreed with their spouses on). At 7:30, they promised an expert who would settle a disagreement that was likely taking place ?in every house in Melbourne.?* Around 7:45, the team finally unveiled their expert, a spokesman for a UK electronics association, who happened to have special expertise in dishwashers. The big question, when they worked up to it, was ?do you need to rinse your plates first?? The answer was no. It wastes water and actually confuses the appliance?s sensors.* Andrew, the dishwasher expert, also assured listeners that it was safe to wash their wine glasses, and that they only had to run the self-cleaning cycle once a month or so. These discussions, as it happened, had also taken place in at least one house in New Jersey. The other topic in the 7 a.m. hour was an upcoming remote from a ski area, described as ?going to the snow.? (It?s the equivalent of February in Australia.) Hawkins wasn?t much of a skier. His wife had skied into a tree once, distracted by her hunky ski instructor. A friend had gotten drunk apr?s-ski and passed out in the snow. Hawkins assured Phillips that he was now watching YouTube videos so he would know how to install snow chains.* The next break was listener calls on their skiing experiences, although the first caller had actually injured themselves not skiing but at their grandma?s funeral. The second friend broke both wrists on the bunny slope and then ?needed a wooden spoon and a spatula? to go to the bathroom. Someone misheard that ?spatula? and suddenly each team member had a line about The Bachelor showing up in your bathroom. (?And here?s a rose for you.?)* I only counted three songs in the 7 a.m. The most local topic was the weather ? extreme storms the night before. But there were two newscasts. (A 23-year-old who threw a bottle at a referee had been arraigned. Both major supermarket chains were cutting prices. The only entertainment story of the hour ? a possible additional season of Yellowstone ? was a brief kicker. But an upcoming morning show contest, the $100,000 Minute, promised to have ?all Melbourne winners.? (The mechanics weren?t being explained yet, but listeners would have to guess which minute of the show was worth money.) The station?s current Cash, Car & a Star contest was offering $20,000, a flyaway to Troye Sivan in NYC, and a Suzuki Swift, and seems to be national. In the 8 a.m. hour, a contestant who chose the $5,000 question over a $50 or $500 prize didn?t know that a group of flamingos was called a flamboyant.* In the 8 a.m. hour, the team also replayed a previous celebrity interview, as part of their ?first 100 shows? celebration. This one was with Phillips?s friend Matt Damon. (They were apparently close enough that Phillips had taken Damon?s daughter clubbing in Greece. The segment replayed that morning was mostly focused on child-rearing.) ?I?m happy you guys are crushing the ratings,? Damon said.* more

    From Radio Insight: Beasley Media Group has opened an Exchange Offer with its debt holders to exchange their outstanding 8.625% Senior Secured Notes due in 2026 into newly issued 9.200% Senior Secured Notes due August 1, 2028 at an exchange ratio of 95.0% of the aggregate principal amount (or $950 per $1,000 of principal amount) of the Existing Notes tendered for exchange. Beasley says that a holder of approximately 73% of the Existing Notes has entered into a transaction support agreement to support the Exchange Offer, subject to certain customary conditions, including a minimum participation condition (the ?TSA Minimum Participation Condition?) requiring 100% of Existing Noteholders to participate in the Exchange Offer or Tender Offer. The issuer of the notes will purchase up to $68.0 million of aggregate principal amount of the Existing Notes to holders who elect to exchange all of their Existing Notes in the Exchange Offer at a purchase price of 62.5% (or $625 per $1,000 of principal amount), plus accrued and unpaid interest. Salvia will be joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and guests on the show. He previously served as half of “The Devil’s Advocates” in that daypart with Civic Media co-founder Mike Crute, who exited at the end of August. Crute and Salvia debuted the show in 2012 on iHeartMedia’s “92.1 The Mic” WXXM Madison and took the show into independent distribution in 2017 following WXXM dropping Liberal Talk in November 2016. Crute would acquire AM signals in Milwaukee (first 1510 WRRD and then 540 WAUK) from Good Karma Brands, while leasing a station in Madison to keep the show going and entering syndication. He and Sage Weil would launch Civic Media in 2022 with the company rapidly expanding across the state. Crute would exit Civic Media ownership at the end of 2023 with the show becoming an independent product. On his final show last Thursday, Crute said, “I never thought it would end like this? I’m done subsidizing rich guys’ programming, and I asked for a job, and apparently this product does not merit pay. We are not equal to those that get paid, and that is an inequitable circumstance that I find untenable.” He added, “We didn’t do something specifically to get pushed off the air, but we have been informed that we’re not welcome beyond the election, that we’re not a part of the future of Civic Media, and if that’s the case, then we’re not a part of the future of Civic Media starting now.” Crute told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he is shopping for a new home for the show. Salvia said, ?I am jazzed as hell to rejoin the Civic Media team and look forward to engaging with the audience for the most important election of our lifetime!? Civic Media CEO Sage Weil commented, “Dom is an experienced and professional broadcaster and a treasured voice to thousands across the state.     From Radio Insight: Evanov Communications will cease operations on three of their FMs in Ontario on Friday, September 20. AC “Lite 98.5” CJWL-FM Ottawa, “Hot Country 92.5” CHRC-FM Rockland and “Hot Country 107.7” CKHK-FM Hawkesbury, which all operate out of Evanov’s Ottawa offices will shut down. The company states, “The media landscape has evolved significantly since CJWL-FM, and subsequently the other two stations, went on the air in 2006. The past 18 years have not only seen new outlets and platforms emerge that have eroded traditional radio revenues, but the long Covid 19 Global Pandemic was also extremely consequential in contributing to traditional radio listeners forming new habits including parking the car, the number one source of radio listening, for a few years. The situation has proven a drain on cash and personnel resources. All broadcasters are now contending with the challenges of increased competition, a difficult media climate, and the residual effects of the pandemic. Like them, ECI is continuing to assess the ongoing impact of these factors on our business, and is readjusting, realigning and reinventing itself as necessary.” Evanov President/CEO Paul Evanov commented, ?I, together with the consensus of my leadership team, have determined that, under the circumstances, our resources and some key employees with these stations would better serve the company if deployed to our other stations. I regret that the media industry, still regulated and a trusted source of news and information in a quagmire of fake news, misinformation and open social media borders, has not received the necessary support and relief sought during the crises or as a pre-emptive and insurance measure that would have us and our fellow broadcasters at a different place at this point. Nevertheless, we will persevere and are confident in the integrity and capability of our company to remain competitive in the markets we continue to serve along with actively pursuing new strategic opportunities. ? The company will retain some of the employees at the stations. Ted Silver will move to the company’s Quebec division to oversee AC “Lite 106.7” CHSV-FM Hudson/Saint-Lazare and Multicultural 1280 CFMB Montreal. Regional Sales Manager Danielle Cyr will continue to oversee those two in Quebec. Brian Sylvester will retain his duties in the company’s news division. more
