From Radio Insight: After being let go in last week’s company-wide layoffs, Christopher ?Morty? Sampaio is returning to his role as morning show producer and Production Director at Beasley Media Classic Hits 96.3 KKLZ Las Vegas. A Beasley spokesperson confirmed the news that was broken on social media by @ShittyRadioJock noting that Morty will return to the station next Monday after word got out to CEO Caroline Beasley that the company had laid off someone battling stage 4 cancer for the past two years. The report stated that Caroline Beasley personally reached out to Sampaio to apologize and reinstate him with full medical benefits. Sampaio was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, along with spots on his liver, and some lymph nodes in 2022 and KKLZ morning co-hosts Mike O?Brian and Carla Rea reopened a GoFundMe to cover his medical costs following his layoff. Morty had been with KKLZ since 2019 after previously holding the same roles at Audacy Hot AC ?Mix 94.1? KMXB from 2010-19. He also spent twelve years at Clear Channel Honolulu. more

From Radio Insight: TM Studios has launched a new jingle package for Alpha Media CHR “Live 95.5” KBFF Portland. Stating that “Live 95.5” needed a jingle package that complimented an Adult CHR station that plays pop hits, the new custom sound and melody includes a 5 note sonic logo “mimicking the name of the station with the right amount of syllables”. KBFF Content Director Dylan Salisbury shouted, “Being a radio nerd, I love jingles. TM knocked it out of the park making us custom jingles for our sonic sound. Not only do they ring the nostalgic bell, but they sound current for radio in 2024.” TM Studios COO/Co-owner Dave Bethell stated, ?We?re on a mission to create great sonic branding and work with Program Directors who appreciate the effectiveness of jingles. While working with Live 95-5 on their new sound we created a fresh 5 note sonic logo, that will imprint into listeners? minds, leaving no doubt what station they?re listening to.? more

From Radio Insight: One of the best things about Runaway Radio,Houston TV news veteran/media columnist Mike McGuff?s tribute to heritage AOR KLOL Houston, is that it lets the radio people speak.* There are celebrity testimonials to KLOL from artists who actually had a close relationship with the station, and don?t feel forced in as they do in some artist docs. Some are no-brainers (ZZ Top?s Dusty Hill, Sammy Hagar), but some come from outside the dominant era of Album Rock radio (Lyle Lovett, who grew up with the station, and Melissa Etheridge, who somehow ended up in a prank war with legendary host Dayna Steele.) But Runaway Radio — the title comes from a KLOL logo featuring a scampering radio with legs ?also gives voice to a wide swath of managers, programmers, and DJs from the station?s 1970-2004 history. As the radio-station documentary becomes a sub-genre unto itself, McGuff serves by doing what the best radio columnists did: finding a way to speak both to industry people and rock-radio fans. Runaway Radio, which came to streaming services in February, traces the history of Album Rock radio through KLOL?s evolution from early ?70s freeform to a more mainstream challenge from KILT-FM, to AOR?s kickass era (as the ?Rock and Roll Army?), to its battle with ABC-owned KSRR (97 Rock), a station with deep-enough pockets to buy out a Who concert. Eventually, KLOL?s problem was not direct competition, but fragmentation from Alternative KTBZ (The Buzz) (where GM Pat Fant ends up) and the Classic Rock format. Much of the second half of Runaway Radio deals with the Stevens & Pruett morning show, fined by the FCC and so controversial that PD Andy Beaubien recalls, ?There were times when I hated my job.? But there?s ample jock representation from throughout the station?s history: quirky early star ?Crash Collins?; eventual R&B PD Levi Booker, who taunted George Harrison into coming to the station; consultant Ed Shane; ?Rock Army?-era host Colonel St. James; KSRR morning man Moby; and late-era night host Greg-O (Onfrio). One of the strengths of Runaway Radio is showing just how big a star Steele became in Houston radio. She and Fant are executive producers, as is promotions director Doug Harris, whose legendary promotions could have filled a documentary of their own. * McGuff spent 14 years making Runaway Radio. The movie serves as an elegy for an entire era of rock radio, but also for a half-dozen interviewees who didn?t live to see the finished product, including Hill, Shane, Collins, and Jim Pruett. One could as easily wax elegiac for the writer who covers radio/TV on a regular basis, but McGuff?s column lives here. * more

From Radio Insight: WP Media and Tracy Johnson Media Group have announced that its AI based content-creation service “Radio Content Pro” is now available for News/Talk stations. RCP Info is described as “the company’s seventh format-specific product that leverages the power of Artificial Intelligence to Inspire Broadcast Performance.” Features are listed as including: Amazing Content: Breaking stories are gathered and curated within minutes, including national news, entertainment, pop culture, viral stories, “Strange But True” topics, breaking content, and more. Multi-Platform: Each piece of content is summarized as a news story, crafted into a monologue or commentary, translated into personality-based responses, crafted into three compelling teases, rewritten as a blog post, developed as four separate phone topic suggestions, and written as social media posts for the most popular platforms. News Stories Written To Be Spoken: RCP Info is a journalist’s dream. Each story is rewritten in a style to be spoken, not read. Perfect for an overworked news team. Tracy Johnson Media Group President/CEO Tracy Johnson states, “RCP Info is the result of over a year of testing to meet the high standards and demands of news organizations and personalities. This goes beyond a typical prep sheet by putting every topic imaginable at your fingertips and providing inspiration for how to turn those topics into exciting, audience-building content.” WKLB Boston and former talk host Jonathan Wier, who beta tested the service, said, “There?s no shortage of content for a talk radio host, but the big challenge is finding unique angles for every topic hour after hour, day after day. Radio Content Pro Info has fixed that. It?s exactly what a host needs to stay fresh and inspired. Sometimes, all it takes is a unique idea from a different perspective and RCP does just that.” RCP Info is available now on a market-exclusive basis. Barter arrangements are available for qualifying stations based on Average Quarter-Hour performance. more

From Radio Insight: John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and Conservative Talk 770 WABC New York has released a statement detailing the timeline of events that led to the suspension and cancellation of Rudy Giuliani’s syndicated afternoon show on Friday, May 10. As I said in my text to Rudy Giuliani on Saturday morning, the good news is we only argue every 40 years. I?ve supported Mayor Giuliani for decades. He did a great job as ?America?s Mayor.? He was tough, which allowed 8 million New Yorkers to walk around freely and feel safe. I bought WABC at a time when media outlets wanted to stay away from associating with Rudy. I gave Rudy his own show and continued to support him despite the criticism I received as a result of this decision. In January 2021, during the fallout of the 2020 election and controversy surrounding the results circulating the news media space, WABC received a letter from lawyers at Dominion Voting Systems, which our own lawyers reviewed. We informed Dominion?s lawyers that we would instruct our on-air talent not to talk about Dominion. Our lawyers came to the decision, in order to protect the station, to direct all on-air talent ?not to state, suggest or imply that the election results are not valid or that the election is not over.? This has remained the policy of the station ever since and is wholly consistent with industry-wide policies. Mayor Guiliani has admitted repeatedly over the past few days that he agreed not to speak about Dominion. However, he was also warned numerous times, particularly in the past few months, to refrain from any allegations of electronic voting manipulation surrounding the 2020 election. Last Tuesday, May 7th, Mayor Giuliani gave me an ultimatum. He texted me that I had to double his airtime and compensation by May 28th. I told him I wanted to sit down in person to discuss this. He repeated his demand on Wednesday, May 8th. That Thursday, May 9th, management was made aware of the Bloomberg News report that Rudy was continuing to double down on his defamatory comments about the Georgia election workers on social media, leading to additional filings against him by the plaintiffs in that lawsuit. As a result of this new information and in an effort to protect the station, that same day, I sent Rudy a letter reminding him not to speak about the legitimacy of the election results on our air. Yet just hours later, during his 3:00 pm show that day, he did just that. The WABC control room has a dump button that creates a delay, in order to allow our board operators to prevent words regulated by the FCC from being broadcast. Last Thursday, shortly after receiving this letter, Rudy closed his show by talking about electronic voting machines, and our board operator dumped the audio, as instructed. We have a copy of this audio in our records. Once again, he was warned not to discuss this topic, and only hours later proceeded to do just that. This is when Rudy issued me a second ultimatum. After his show was abruptly pulled from the air on Thursday night, May 9th, Rudy texted me at 6:41 pm, saying ?I am disregarding every order given in this letter.? It is important to note that Rudy was not even suspended yet at this point in time. On Friday morning, May 10th, at 8:57 am, I texted Rudy, saying, ?Rudy I love you. I?ve supported you for 40 years. I look forward to sitting down together one on one.? Rudy responded by stating that he will continue to disregard the instructions in this letter. In light of all of the above, management held a meeting at noon on Friday to decide how to proceed. My primary concern, as a responsible journalist, was that Rudy would continue talking about the electronic voting machines, as he attempted to do on Thursday. Of course, nobody here has ever been fired for free speech or talking about the election, even though in my mind, talking about the election of 2020 is like talking about who shot Kennedy. At the end of the day, Rudy attempted to talk about the manipulation of electronic voting machines. He has admitted this himself. As Rudy mentioned this weekend, in November 2023, Newsmax subpoenaed WABC and myself questioning our exclusion from a lawsuit that Newsmax was a part of, which our lawyers are handling. To be clear, WABC is not a party to this lawsuit and there is no factual or legal basis for this subpoena. In a Saturday May 11th, New York Post article, Mayor Giuliani admitted that he was on the payroll of Newsmax. This is concerning to me, especially in light of the subpoena which was issued to us this past November. Given his recent ultimatum, his direct violation of an agreement he signed to not talk about electronic voting machines, and his absolute refusal to abide by company policy, the company had no choice but to suspend him last Friday, pending further discussions. All we wanted to do was suspend him until we could have a sit-down meeting in person, as I communicated with him. However, his actions this weekend appeared to be an attempt to force my hand. On Friday afternoon, May 10th, Rudy appeared on various non-WABC internet-streamed programs, including his own personal internet show, criticizing management and WABC itself, while making extreme accusations about a greater plot against him. On his personal Sunday internet show, Rudy, in an attempt to deflect from his own conduct on WABC, mischaracterized our station?s issues with him, claiming that his suspension was based on our issues with Newsmax. Rudy has publicly accused me of suppressing his free speech, calling my decision ?unconstitutional? and a violation of the First Amendment. However, as a licensee of the FCC, the First Amendment grants me the rights and responsibilities to protect WABC. Each decision I make is guided by what I believe best serves the station, our listeners, and above all, the truth. John Catsimatidis May 13, 2024 more

From Radio Insight: Adams Radio Group has shifted Variety Hits “103.9 Wayne-FM” WWFW Fort Wayne IN to Classic Hits. Shedding its “We Play Everything” positioning for “Best of the 80s & 90s”, the move sees the station drop most of its post-2000 music to closer move it against ST Media’s “Classic Hits 101.7” WLDE with WWFW being more Pop/Rhythmic leaning to WLDE’s Rock lean. WLDE was fifth in the Fort Wayne market with a 5.9 share in the Fall 2023 Nielsen Audio ratings, while WWFW was thirteenth with a 2.7. more
